New 2022 Ford Ranger Raptor brings 284hp petrol V6 for £57,340 Car News

The new version of the hardcore Ford Ranger Raptor pickup replaced its 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine with a significantly more powerful 3.0-liter petrol V6 and received a radical redesign influenced by the American market F-150 Raptor .

Available to order now from £57,340, this is the first version of the new fourth-generation Ranger to go on sale in Europe, with deliveries starting in late summer. The standard Ford truck, unveiled in 2021, will follow by the end of this year.

The new 3.0-liter twin-turbo petrol V6 produces 284 hp – an increase of 74 hp – and 362 lb-ft. Although Ford has yet to reveal performance figures, the new Raptor should comfortably outpace the previous version, which needed 10.1 seconds to hit 62 mph. rest. However, the current 2.0-liter diesel engine will also be available in the Raptor from 2023.

A “racing” anti-lag system, similar to that used by the Ford GT supercar and hot Ford Focus ST hatchback, keeps the turbos spinning for three seconds after takeoff, to allow the driver to regain power sooner after exiting a bend, for example. The turbos are also mapped to start spinning at different times in each of the automatic gearbox’s 10 gears, to give the straightest acceleration curve.

Ford Performance program manager Justin Capicchiano told Autocar: “It’s a totally captivating experience. You have a rowdy twin-turbo petrol V6. It sounds great – we spent a lot of time in the sound lab – and it comes with the performance that comes with it now. It has the look, the bark and the bite. We’re really proud of this one.

As with the previous Raptor, changes from the standard Ranger go well beyond the powertrain. The chassis has been completely revised to improve off-road performance and durability, with new mounts and braces throughout, extended-travel suspension with low-friction 2.5-inch live-valve Fox shocks and a baseplate 2.3mm thick steel that is twice as long. standard Ranger size.
