A survey of 2,000 women found that eight in 10 have attempted styling at home in the past, including cutting, coloring and perming.

But 28% of them admitted that they were never quite right.

As a result, 34% had to ask a professional to fix the problem.

Some of the top “hair accident” fears include bald patches, uneven cuts, or their hair will take on an odd shade.

Burning hair on heated styling products, cutting it too short and jagged bangs were also among the top at-home styling fears.

When it comes to coloring their hair, women fear ruining the texture, or choosing the wrong shade for their skin tone and then regretting it.

The research also found that despite nervousness, women style their hair at home every three and a half months on average.

And a quarter feel excited when changing their style on their own.

The main reasons for the DIY approach are to have complete control, to be very picky about the style they want and to be more affordable, with women spending an average of £123 on their hair every six months.

Almost seven in 10 (69%) choose to dye their own hair, leaving 46% feeling confident, 28% attractive and more than one in 10 feeling free.

And social media inspired 35% of them to be more creative with their cut and color, according to the OnePoll study.
