Key roads in the South West – such as the M5, M4 and A303 – will be upgraded, with millions of pounds being spent on them.
Work will begin in the coming weeks, according to National Highways. Projects include resurfacing roads, replacing bridge joints, creating bike paths, improving signage and landscaping.
Other roads for improvement include the A40, A36, A30 and A38. Motorists, pedestrians and cyclists are all ready to benefit from the planned works, according to the national highways.
In total, the government-owned company will spend £167million on more than 100 projects in Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset, Bath and North East Somerset, Wiltshire, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall.
Where will the road works take place?
National Highways will begin work on its comprehensive maintenance program in the coming weeks, with programs including:

Mark Fox, Acting Regional Director of National Highways, said: “Hundreds of thousands of drivers use our roads every day for work journeys, home deliveries and the movement of goods and services, so it is essential to maintain in good condition to ensure safety. and reliability. With this investment, National Highways will continue to provide essential maintenance and upgrades throughout the region to improve safety and help drivers stay on the move.
This latest investment in the region’s roads follows last year’s essential maintenance program which saw National Highways pump in £200million for the completion of 121 road renewal and maintenance projects. Over the past 12 months, National Highways has resurfaced 172.1 miles of highways and Major A-roads in the Southwest, using 221,177 tons of resurfacing material.
An additional 84,948 road posts were installed to help light the way for drivers, 47.8 miles of crash barriers were renewed, with 14 miles of drainage improvements to reduce roadway flooding and 36 new bridge joints .
