Naked bather helps rescue struggling paddleboarder on South West Beach Bath City News

Those of us who live in the West Country get used to reading about or hearing about seaside rescues. Spend any time on the beach or the coastal path and you will regularly see the air ambulance or the coastguard helicopter above your head or a moonlit coastguard truck.

But one bailout in particular over the Jubilee bank holiday weekend may have topped the lot.

Cornwall Live content editor Jeff Reines was spending the day at Pednvounder in Treen when he saw a paddleboarder in trouble among the waves, only for help to come from an unexpected source.

He wrote: “The guy was coming in as I came out, after a few underwater dumps on the way to shore. He had brand new gear including, unlike me, a life jacket. I offered my council and he left.

“As I was drying off and within minutes I realized I couldn’t see it. It was nowhere. Gone. I kept scanning the horizon thinking it wasn’t possible and that maybe it just wasn’t visible behind the waves, as my wife said I was gone most of the time.

“Then I saw his partner, pacing on the sand, her hand blocking the bright sun as she looked out to sea. She was scared. She said he had gone right, towards Porthcurno and around from the rocky outcrop you have to descend to reach the paradise of Pednvounder There is always a current pulling in that direction – and a strong rip in rough seas – but the speed at which it disappeared was breathtaking There would only be waves crashing on the rocks around that corner, and a beginner paddleboarder in overhead.

“I said I’d try to spot it and rushed into the water. No sign. I got out as far as I could before I felt unsafe in the circuit breakers as I sank several times and swallowed sea water. Still no sightings.

“Back on the sand, a real panic started to set in, my heart beating a little faster, thinking that she and I were the only ones of the dozens on the beach who knew something was wrong and not knowing what to do next. There’s no phone signal.”

It was then that Jeff saw a fully naked man joining the rescue.

He added: “That’s when the naked dude appeared, to my left. Pednvounder is a nudist beach and walking through in all his naked glory with a radio in his hand was an aged tanned local medium that shouted something like “lifeguard” or “coast guard”. He climbed the 30 foot climb, free manhood and obviously carefree bare bottom where a life could be in danger.

“At the top, he was soon clearly in control, standing surreal among the multi-dressed crowd.

“The boarder’s partner could only watch in fear – along with her two little dogs. The couple were camping at Treen and were obviously new to it all. She would later explain how their tent was bigger than they thought…

“After a few tense moments it became clear that all was well. A woman who was on the cliff said he was back on dry land. The lifeline in a box near the path had been thrown away and the paddleboarder had climbed to safety.

“A naked guy came back down to the beach and came back all the way to the end naked, so to speak. I had a conversation and it turns out, such is the known potential betrayal of the place, he’s part from a group of volunteer radio managers who carry the devices when on Pednvounder, dramatically surrounded by high cliffs and impenetrable to mobile signals. emergency can be contacted in the event of an unforeseen event.

“My wife helped the woman catch her dogs and prepare the rocks and when I joined them I saw my exhausted fellow novice being comforted by his beloved.”
