Sally Arnold said she and her family traveled from Shoreham to attend the picnic.

The mother-of-two said that, despite not being massive royalists, ‘it’s hard not to like the Queen’.

“Luckily the sun is out, the kids are playing and there is also live music which is a bonus. What a day in Brighton,” she said.

“We love the Queen – who doesn’t. We’re just here to have a great day out with the family.”

The family event featured a range of activities, including performances by Head First Acrobats, local cellist Robin Sparrow, juggler Richard Filby and Mr. Pineapplehead.

Glen, a vendor of Union Jack flags at the picnic, said the trade intensified significantly on Saturday.

“I’ve been here about three days, but today [Saturday] is the only day I made a lot of money. People go there today,” he said.

“And I will donate to a homeless charity from all the money I earn over the long weekend.

“I have never met a member of the royal family, but I would like to. It would be a good experience.”

Grace Tomlinson said she viewed the event as a chance to “hang out” with her friends.

Like many others, the 19-year-old spent the day in the gardens enjoying a glass of champagne.

The Royal Pavilion will also be lit up in purple and platinum over the weekend to celebrate 70 years of Her Majesty’s reign.
