In total, the UrbanRebel measures 4036mm long by 1975mm wide and 1576mm high, making it a close match to the Ford Fiesta Active, for context. It now sits 218mm proud of the ground, significantly higher than 2021’s ultra-low concept, which will improve visibility all around and make it easier to get in and out.
Cupra highlights the two “lines of tension” on the hood, the muscular creases on the sides and the blacked-out A-pillar (which it says gives the visual effect of a motorcycle helmet) as defining characteristics of its design. The Born’s influence is clear – right down to the wraparound LED taillight bar and chunky but decorative rear diffuser – but not being based on an existing sister car means the UrbanRebel is far more bespoke in its design. than the Born.
The fact that entry-level EVs recently previewed by Volkswagen and Skoda appear to adopt a radically different silhouette from the UrbanRebel speaks to a concerted effort by VW Group brands to differentiate the styling of cars based on shared platforms. Admittedly, while similar in its raised supermini positioning, the original straight-edged Volkswagen ID Life concept – also shown in Munich last year and based on the same platform as the UrbanRebel – bore no visual relation to Cupra’s car.
Early performance figures from Cupra peg the front-drive UrbanRebel’s power output at a maximum of 231bhp, which it says is good for 0-62mph in just 6.9 seconds. Whether the marque will offer cheaper, less powerful variants or a higher performance range remains to be seen, but Volkswagen has previously hinted that the platform could accommodate more powerful drivetrain arrangements.
