Bomb squad returns to Worthing after ‘suspicious substance’ found Brighton News

A BOMB team returned to a city center road for the third time in two days after a “suspicious substance” was discovered.

Emergency services remained at the scene in Tarring Road, Worthing through the afternoon today.

But the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Unit was called to the same house at around 6.30pm this evening after a ‘suspicious substance’ was discovered.

The road has also been closed by Sussex Police as a precaution and will remain closed while EOD officers “carry out a further assessment”.

A Sussex Police spokesperson told The Argus: ‘Officers are present at Tarring Road in Worthing after a suspicious substance was found on the property.

“The road has been closed between Shakespeare Road and Heene Road as a precaution while Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers carry out a further assessment.

“Police will remain at the scene while the assessment is complete and further communications will be issued once the road can be reopened.”

A “suspicious package” was destroyed by Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers after police attended the address around 9am on Wednesday June 8. The demining team returned Wednesday evening around 9 p.m.

A 52-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and remains in police custody.

It is unclear how long the road closure will remain in place.
