Rrejoice! UK house prices have finally started to calm down, according to the latest figures from Halifax.

At first glance, this might seem like good news for aspiring homeowners looking for that elusive first rung of the property ladder.

But they should probably refrain from celebrating for now. Halifax found prices rose 10.5% in the year to May, down slightly from the previous month but still ridiculous. The average house price hit a record high of £289,099 in May, and across the UK the value of the typical property rose by £2,857 month-on-month.
