Eleven people from the climate activist group Just Stop Oil staged a protest outside Neville Street Central Station around 2pm on Saturday June 11. The protesters were calling on the government to end new licenses and the production of fossil fuels.
The group, largely made up of students, sat in the middle of the road in an attempt to block traffic and draw attention to their message.
However, protesters found themselves being abducted by members of the public, Chronicle Live reports.
Just Stop Oil protester Alex De Koning, 24, said Just Stop Oil was campaigning to block all new fossil fuel licenses in the North Sea.
He said: “The intention was to do it for four and a half minutes. We didn’t want to do it too long because we didn’t want to disturb people too much, but we wanted to do it long enough to get the message out there. .
“We’ve never faced such a reaction before at Newcastle. It was quite shocking. We were only there for four minutes, so it was a surprise we weren’t prepared for.
“The protesters were really upset and shaken. Luckily they weren’t hurt and they’re all ready to do it again, which is really empowering.”
Northumbria Police confirmed officers attended the scene and spoke to those present, but no offenses were reported.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Shortly after 2.20pm on Saturday 11th June we were made aware of an ongoing protest in Neville Street, Newcastle.
“Officers attended the scene and spoke to those present, many of whom had begun to disperse. No violations were reported.”
