Mr Johnson, 58, recently visited Kyiv as part of the UK’s continued support for Ukraine against Russia. After his visit to the country, he also said that Ukraine should be given the opportunity to host the Eurovision Song Contest in 2023.
In an article written when Mr Johnson returned from his meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Friday and published in the Sunday Times, he said: “Time is now the vital factor. Everything will depend on Ukraine’s ability to strengthen its ability to defend its soil faster than Russia can renew its ability to attack. Our task is to buy time alongside Ukraine.
He laid out a four-point plan for a better sustainability of Ukraine.
The plan calls for Ukraine to receive weapons, equipment, ammunition and training “faster than the invader” – with up to 10,000 troops trained every four months.
He wants to see more funding offered to pay salaries, run schools, provide aid and start rebuilding where possible.
Mr Johnson hopes overland transport routes will be developed to ensure Ukraine’s economy continues to function despite Russia’s blockade of its export routes across the Black Sea.
And finally, the focus on getting food – including 25 million tonnes of corn and wheat piled up in silos across Ukraine – out of the country.
Western nations have tried to strike a balance between punishing Russia and protecting their economies.
However, Mr Johnson insists the price of a hasty settlement in Ukraine would not be worth paying.

The British Prime Minister continued: “Imagine for a moment that Vladimir Putin’s visions of glory come true. Suppose he is free to keep all areas of Ukraine now controlled by Russian forces.
“What if no one was willing to lift a finger as they annexed this conquered territory and its fearful people into a greater Russia? Would that bring peace? Would the world be safer? Would you be safer?
“In our hearts we know the answer. Such a travesty would be the greatest victory of aggression in Europe since World War II.
Mr Johnson writes: “None of these measures will yield immediate results, although the need to restore food exports could hardly be more urgent. All of this will take a determined effort from the UK and our allies that will last for months and years.

“And all of them serve a purpose. We must strengthen the hand of our Ukrainian friends to end this war on the terms that President Zelensky has set out. That should be the definition of success.
He adds: “In doing so, we and our allies will protect our own security as much as that of Ukraine and protect the world from the deadly dreams of Putin and anyone who might seek to copy them.
