The Millers looked set to lose last season’s top scorer after being in talks with a number of rival Championship clubs, with boss Paul Warne apparently accepting that Smith will play for a new club next season.

Sheffield Wednesday have also reportedly expressed an interest in bringing Smith to Hillsborough.

But the 30-year-old is yet to put pen to paper elsewhere, with reports of failed talks, and the South Yorkshire outfit still hope he stays.

He was offered a bumper deal in May which would easily make him the club’s top earner and could still be signed.

The centre-half, named in last year’s PFA League One squad, is said to have agreed a deal with Derby, which would be done if the Rams were snapped up soon.

Warne hopes to boost the club’s recruitment drive with a number of signings over the coming week.

The boss had said he needed up to nine players this summer as the Millers prepare for life in the Championship.
