Claire Kirkpatrick, head of club development at MSUK, revealed that nine top motoring clubs have already embraced the idea with more to join soon.

After lunch and a lively conversation, our contingent of hacks headed out to an autosolo track which MSUK Marshals had carefully laid out on the taxiways of the old airfield so we could see grassroots motorsport in action. In a £1000 Mini One, sound but absolutely nothing special, I was thrown around the course several times by several self-testing champions and stuntman Alan Wakeman, whose brilliantly quick and precise performances reminded me very clearly of the motorsport rule number one: improve your skills before you spend money on your car. It’s been a few years since Autocar’s resident automotive designer, Ben Summerell-Youde, cooked up a concept for a McLaren SUV and put it on this very page. At the time we were trying to be ironic: everyone in the supercar patch was working on (or already making good money with) SUVs, but McLaren was busy expanding its two-door range and officially avoided any suggestion. Now the wind has changed.

McLaren is about to have a CEO who has already created SUVs for Porsche and Ferrari. Its message is the same one that made Porsche such a modern high-performance pioneer: make SUVs a success and you can build all the supercars your market could want.
