Moped accident while on holiday in Bali: British couple fight for life after horrific road accident | United Kingdom | New UK News

Alex Hoyle, 28, from West Bridgford, and Joella Senior, 27, from Loughborough, were traveling on a moped when they crashed at around 9.10pm local time on Sunday evening, according to close friend Georgie Seel.

Georgie, 26, from West Bridgford, says the couple are in critical condition in hospital, requiring multiple surgeries.

In an email sent by Alex’s stepfather, Andrew Scott, on behalf of his mother Amanda Hoyle and father Geoff Hoyle, Alex underwent six hours of surgery on Thursday to stabilize fractured thoracic vertebrae – the spines to which the ribs are attached.

His liver, diaphragm and lung lacerations were also repaired and his multiple rib fractures were clipped and/or stapled.

Alex is currently sedated and will remain so for the foreseeable future, and he still needs major surgery to repair severe fractures to his jaw, cheekbone and temporal bones.

It is unclear when he will be fit enough to undergo the procedure.

Joella also underwent major surgery to repair displaced forearm fractures, stabilize fractures in the lumbar vertebrae (back bones between the rib cage and pelvis) and have a clavicle clad with a cheekbone.

She is conscious and is said to be fine.

Alex’s family is at his bedside in Bali, while Joella’s family are hoping to join as soon as possible as her mother is having trouble getting an emergency passport.

The email, seen by Nottinghamshire Live, said: “Geoff and Amanda and April (Hoyle, sister) are encouraged by the excellent surgical work undertaken for both of them so far.

“Joella’s father hopes to arrive in Bali later this week, but unfortunately her mother is still struggling to get an emergency passport despite her strenuous efforts.

“All family members and friends are deeply touched by the generosity, love and best wishes they receive from friends, family members and even complete strangers.

“It’s amazing for the family how caring and generous people can be during these tough economic times for all of us.”

Speaking to Nottinghamshire Live, Georgie said: “I was just in complete disbelief. My partner and I (Oli Rowland, 29, from West Bridgford) chatted with them that day and they were spending every two the best vacation time of their lives.

“They had dated for two weeks in Bali on their first real getaway together, and it happened on the third day. I knew something was serious when I was asked to get the phone number from Alex’s mother.

“I’m Joella’s best friend and Oli is Alex’s best friend, and it has been their whole life. We thought they couldn’t have had an accident.

“Oli and I are getting married, Joella is one of my bridesmaids and Alex is one of Oli’s groomsmen. We introduced them to each other around October or November of Last year.

“I work as a branding manager for Dunelm, and I met Joella about five years ago when we were both working there. We’ve been so close to each other ever since. .”

Oli and Georgie set up a JustGiving page to help cover Alex and Joella’s medical bills. And the response was “overwhelming”.

Georgie said: “The response has been so overwhelming. We hit the page within hours of discovering it with a target of £10,000, and within 48 hours it was doubled.

“The costs for them are astronomical which is why it has been increased to £100,000.

“I think being in an intensive care unit bed there costs something like £2,500 a night each, and that’s before you have medication or surgery or anything like that.

“The generosity and kindness of others has been amazing, especially as we are in a new cost of living pandemic.”

A spokesman for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office said: ‘We are providing support to the families of two British nationals involved in a road accident in Bali and are in contact with local authorities.
