Starbucks is looking to replace the old Maplin unit in Bedford’s St John’s Business Park with a 24-hour drive-thru cafe.

The planning application, which has been submitted to Bedford Borough Council, says the unit has been vacant since the collapse of Maplin in 2018.

The site, which could generate 90 vehicle movements per hour, does not require a new access junction to the retail park. The drive-thru will be accessible from inside the existing retail park parking lot.

The drive-thru lane will be constructed by removing ten parking spaces, but eight replacement parking spaces will be constructed as part of the project.

This includes two electric vehicle charging bays, two disabled bays and four standard bays.

Two existing bays will also be converted to command/hold bays. This, according to the applicant, will result in a net loss of two parking spaces.

Bedford’s fundraiser scales Everest without ever leaving town – and nearly raises…

It is expected that there will be approximately 53 vehicle movements in both directions during the site’s busiest hour on weekdays. This will increase to approximately 90 vehicle movements in both directions during rush hour on a Saturday.

This means that approximately three vehicles every two minutes will arrive or depart from the site.

The drive-thru is expected to generate 20-30 full-time jobs.

The deadline for global consultation of the application is Friday, September 2, 2022.
