West Wittering coastguard incident: Tireless search stood down Brighton News

There was a major overnight search off the coast in West Wittering which began on Monday evening and continued well into Tuesday.

Contrary to an earlier official report given to The Argus, the West Wittering Estate said that a man was still missing.

Coastguard rescue teams from Hayling, Hill Head, Portsmouth and Selsey took part in the emergency operation as well as a coastguard helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft and RNLI lifeboats from Bembridge, Hayling, Portsmouth and Selsey.

The independent lifeboat from Gosport was also sent.

A spokeswoman for West Wittering Estate said: “We have been working tirelessly with local HM coastguard rescue teams, HM coastguard helicopters and RNLI lifeboats, as well as passing vessels, in search for a man reported to be in difficulty in the water last night.

“The extensive operation has since stood down and our thoughts are with the gentleman’s family during this difficult time.”
