The beautiful UK village losing its only pub as its being turned into a huge holiday home | UK | News UK News

A village is losing its only pub which is being turned into a huge holiday home.

The owners of the White Hart pub have tried their best to make it success – but say they just can’t compete with what’s on offer at the local social club in Leonard Stanley, near Stroud, which sits in the shadow of the Cotswolds.

Now planning permission has been granted for the historic pub to be turned into a six-bedroom holiday home for families – meaning the beautiful village will be left without one.

The planning report that was put together for Stroud District Council said that the village still had places for the community to get together including the village hall and the social club with public bar, pool table, dart board and big screen.

It said: “Leonard Stanley is well supported by facilities of similar use.

“The applicant has indicated that the White Hart is not able to compete with the lower prices offered by the other organisations within the village, in particular the Social Club.”

After closing in 2022, the White Hart pub re-opened in April this year as a cafe and guesthouse, reports GloucesterLive.

But it struggled due to a downturn in trade after the COVID lockdowns, competition from the social club and a lack of B&B visitors.

There were also attempts to sell the Gloucestershire pub – but without any serious interest.

The application argued: “There is no longer any likelihood of a Bed and Breakfast, public house or other appropriate community use continuing on the site.”

Now, the large three-storey building will have its signage taken down and its bar converted into a lounge, a dining room, a games room, and a sitting room, all just on the ground floor.

On the second floor, the existing living area will be turned into a series of five bedrooms to accommodate the large groups.

When the pub closed on in November last year, punters were “gutted”.

The Facebook post said: “So here we are as many of you now know the White Hart Pub and b&b will close its doors tonight!

“I had the pleasure of managing here for the last year just over, I have met some amazing people had some wonderful staff all of whom I shall miss greatly!

“After a few tears tonight I just want to thank everyone who supported not only the pub but also me.

“Until we all meet again much love.” One commenter said: “Gutted.” And another: “I’m sad.”
