New train strikes announced by drivers’ union ASLEF | Business News

New strikes have been announced by the train drivers’ union ASLEF.

Drivers will stage fresh industrial action and an overtime ban from the end of the month in a long-running pay dispute.

A programme of one-day strikes is designed to “pile pressure” on 16 train companies nationwide.

Full list of dates and lines affected

Rail passengers are being warned to expect disruption over the next week because of strikes and an overtime ban by train drivers in their long-running dispute over pay. Members of Aslef at 16 train operating companies will refuse to work overtime from Friday until December 9 and will stage a series of strikes between December 2 and 8. Issue date: Friday December 1, 2023.

The announced dates and affected operators are:

Tuesday 30 January: Southeastern, Southern/Gatwick Express, GTR Thameslink, South Western Railway main line and depot drivers, SWR Island Line

ASLEF members – who account for 96% of train drivers in England, Scotland and Wales – will also refuse to work on their rest days from 29 January to 6 February.

The union claims that train drivers have not had a pay rise since April 2019.

Mick Whelan, ASLEF’s general secretary, said: “We have given the government every opportunity to come to the table, but it is now a year since we had any contact from the Department for Transport. It’s clear they do not want to resolve this dispute.”

He went on to urge the government, and train operating companies, to “come to the table with a realistic offer so we can end this dispute”.

But Downing Street condemned the union’s decision to support further strikes.

The prime minister’s official spokesman said: “This is extremely disappointing. Not least to commuters, who have already been so badly hit by ASLEF’s decision to continually strike.

“ASLEF drivers continue to be paid far above what the average person in the UK receives.

“Rail companies have made a fair and reasonable offer, and we would…

UK weather: ‘Severe’ alert on the roads as freezing temperatures and snow forecast | UK News

Drivers could end up stranded or delayed this week as freezing temperatures hit the UK – with National Highways issuing a “severe weather alert” for snow.

The travel warning covers northwest England on Tuesday and coincides with four days of Met Office warnings for snow and ice.

Temperatures 5-6C lower than normal are forecast, with sunshine for many today but nearly all of the UK struggling to get more than a couple of degrees above zero.

Monday’s snow and ice warning covers the whole of Northern Ireland and northern Scotland.

On Tuesday, the area expands to cover a large swathe of northern England, the whole of Scotland, and North Wales.

National Highways, which manages motorways and major roads, is urging drivers to “check ahead and plan for disruption” as “widespread snow” is expected in the North West.

It warns of potential delays and stranded vehicles – with 5-10cm possible on top of the A66 and M62 – and other parts getting between 1cm and 5cm.

Some rural communities could be cut off and rail services may also be delayed or cancelled, it adds.

“We would recommend people stick to the main roads and avoid country lanes where possible,” says Met Office meteorologist Liam Eslick.

“These are the places that aren’t going to see any gritting or any road clearances for the next couple of days.

“So we recommend people take their time, make sure they have time to do their cars in the mornings, and go steady.”

Folkestone: Boy killed after ‘hit-and-run’ buried in historic cemetery after King granted permission | UK News

A schoolboy killed in a suspected hit-and-run has been buried in a historic churchyard that was “so dear to his heart” after the King granted special permission.

William Brown, seven, was killed on the A259 Sandgate Esplanade in Folkestone, Kent, on December 6 last year.

His father, William Brown Snr, said William had been trying to collect his football when the crash happened.

The King granted permission for him to be buried under a chestnut tree in the grounds of St Mary & St Eanswythe Church after a campaign by his family and friends. The churchyard has been closed for burials since 1857.

William had written in his school yearbook in 2021: “I feel peaceful when I am sat under the chestnut tree.”

Hundreds of mourners stood outside the packed 400-seat capacity church for the service.

Two white horses transported William’s coffin to the church, draped in a Manchester United flag and accompanied by items including a club football and trophy.

His father was among others who carried the coffin inside.

William had a “unique spirit” and was hailed as a “best friend to many” by his mother, Laura Brown.

“He was a child of God and he spent nearly every day after school in that graveyard,” Mrs Brown said ahead of the service.

“He would spend his time collecting conkers, foraging for wild garlic or generally digging, something that he loved.”

Snow set to cause disruption as Britain braces for week of freezing temperatures | UK News

Snow is set to hit parts of Scotland today before spreading south next week as cold air from the Arctic brings freezing temperatures.

Up to 5cm of snow is expected in places by the end of Sunday, causing disruption on the roads and railways.

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice is in place into Monday, covering areas including the Highlands and the Orkney and Shetland Islands.

Northern Ireland could also see up to 5cm of snow on higher ground on Monday, with a yellow warning in place from 3am until the end of the day.

Forecasters predict the snow will then move south over the course of the week, with the potential for wintry weather in parts of northern England on Tuesday.

Southern regions were said to be at “low risk” of snow.

Met Office meteorologist Honor Criswick said: “It is going to be feeling pretty chilly in the north of Scotland.

“Throughout the week we are going to see more and more snow showers and warnings, towards the end of the week we will probably see an accumulation.

“The warning is of 2cm to 5cm of snow, throughout the week there is the possibility we will see a build up of snow.

Why forecasting snow in the UK is a big challenge

“On Tuesday, we are going to see more rain turning to snow moving east across the country, with more prolonged snow and more accumulations at low levels in the north of Scotland and northern England.

“That’s where we could see 5cm or 10cm of snow in low-lying areas.

“There’s a very low chance the south might see a bit of it.”

Yvonne Tracey: Former Post Office worker to challenge Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey at general election | UK News

A woman who spent more than three decades working for the Post Office is planning to stand against Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey – a former postal affairs minister – at the next general election.

Yvonne Tracey, who said ITV drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office had made her “very sad” and “very angry”, lives in Sir Ed’s constituency of Kingston and Surbiton in southwest London.

The 68-year-old grandmother said she cannot allow him to “stand again unchallenged”.

Hundreds of sub-postmasters and sub-postmistresses were wrongly held responsible for accounting errors created by faulty software.

Those affected by the Horizon IT scandal are “still not hearing the truth”, Ms Tracey told Sky News.

They “still haven’t got justice” and “haven’t got answers”, she said. “Some of them haven’t had their names cleared. I just felt I had to do something to help them.”

‘I got sectioned because of scandal’

Sir Ed, who was postal minister between 2010 and 2012 during the coalition government, refused to meet sub-postmaster Alan Bates, whom the ITV drama is named after, saying in a short letter that it “wouldn’t serve any purpose”.

More on Liberal Democrats

According to Ms Tracey, a sub-postmaster who ran a post office in Sir Ed’s constituency lost his home, his business and attempted to take his own life on more than one occasion after being caught up in the scandal.

She said: “He tried three times to get in touch with Sir Ed and every time he was turned away, refused or ignored.”

The Liberal Democrats said the sub-postmaster lived outside Sir Ed’s constituency and parliamentary convention meant he was therefore unable to get involved in the case.

Asked if the Post Office scandal…

Hollywood strikes force Vue cinema chain into fresh debt restructuring | Business News

Vue International, Europe’s largest independent cinema operator, is finalising a fresh debt restructuring after the Hollywood actors’ strike halted the release of a string of blockbuster movies.

Sky News has learnt that UK-based Vue, its shareholders and lenders are in the process of organising the company’s second debt-for-equity swap in 18 months in a bid to put the business on a sustainable long-term footing.

Under the plans, hundreds of millions of pounds of existing debt will be converted to equity, with roughly £50m of new capital being injected into the company.

This weekend, Vue’s founder and chief executive, Tim Richards, told Sky News: “The unforeseen and unprecedented six months of strike action by Hollywood actors and writers in 2023 has had a short and medium-term impact on the industry, pushing back the release of anticipated number of movies and delaying the pipeline of new content.

“We are in discussions with our shareholders and lenders to ensure the business has the right capital structure to thrive and maximise exciting opportunities ahead once the pipeline of new content improves later this year and in 2025.”

Last year’s strikes brought the epicentre of the global film-making industry to a standstill, impacting studios, distributors and cinema operators.

Among the titles whose release was delayed by the crisis was Dune: Part Two, a sequel which had been among the most anticipated movies of 2023.

Vue employs more than 8,000 people and operates more than 225 multiplexes in countries including the UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy and Taiwan.

One source said that the latest restructuring underlined its stakeholders’ confidence in the long-term prospects of the business, with hits this year expected to include the third instalment of the Deadpool franchise, Beetlejuice 2 and Gladiator 2.

Led by Mr Richards, Vue completed a previous restructuring almost exactly a year ago, which saw £470m of debt wiped out and the company taken over by…

Post Office could face £100m bill and insolvency over Horizon compensation tax relief, expert claims | UK News

The Post Office could be facing a £100m bill and insolvency after claiming tax relief for its compensation payments to sub-postmasters, a tax expert has claimed.

Dan Neidle, the head of non-profit organisation Tax Policy Associates, said the Post Office claimed £934m tax relief for its compensation payments, and suggested it could be “unlawful”.

The Horizon scandal saw more than 700 sub-postmasters and sub-postmistresses handed criminal convictions after faulty Fujitsu accounting software made it appear as though money was missing at their branches.

Who are the key figures in Post Office IT scandal?

Mr Neidle posted on X saying: “The Post Office claimed £934m tax relief for its compensation payments to the postmasters it persecuted. That’s outrageous. It’s also unlawful – so the Post Office now faces an unexpected £100m tax bill. It may be insolvent.

“Our team of eminent tax and accounting experts reviewed the Post Office’s accounts for the last ten years in detail and one issue stood out: it has treated the compensation it pays to postmasters as tax deductible. That is not correct.

“A source at the Post Office has confirmed to us that HMRC is investigating this and asserting that the Post Office owes tax – in our view they are right to do so.”

Sven-Goran Eriksson hopes he’ll be well enough to watch England v Brazil in March – and reveals one unfulfilled wish | UK News

Terminally-ill Sven-Goran Eriksson wants to be well enough to watch England take on Brazil in two months’ time – and has revealed one wish he never fulfilled.

The former England manager has pancreatic cancer – with about a year left to live at the “best case” – and the 75-year-old told Sky News’ Niall Paterson he wants to stay as healthy as he can in that time.

He wants to “not have too much pain” and plans to make it to England to watch the Three Lions taking on Brazil on 23 March at Wembley.

Sven-Goran Eriksson has revealed what he would like to do with the time he has left
Image:

Asked how he wants to spend the time he has left, he said: “Travelling, looking at a lot of football still.

“I hope maybe to go to England and see England versus Brazil in March. Great game, a warm-up for the World Cup, because that could also be the final [of World Cup 2026].”

And the role in football that he wished didn’t pass him by?

“My father is still a Liverpool supporter and I am a Liverpool supporter too, always have been,” he said.

“So I always wished to be the manager of Liverpool and that will not happen, but I’m still a Liverpool fan.”

He said waking up without pain is a “great gift” that we “take for granted” while healthy, but not when ill.

His children had taken him to hospital after he “felt dizzy” and “fell”, with doctors telling him he had a “small stroke” before revealing his cancer.

Since revealing his diagnosis on Thursday, he says he has received “a lot of messages and phone calls” from former colleagues and players he coached, including from his days as England boss.
