Gareth Jones died in ‘heroic act’ while trying to save his dog in Hove Brighton News

A FATHER drowned while trying to save his dog in a “heroic act,” a coroner has said.

Gareth Jones was reported missing on Saturday January 16 after he failed to return from walking his family’s dog Connie in the Hove Lagoon area.

A huge search was launched for Wilbury Gardens’ father of three, Hove, with hundreds of volunteers supporting emergency teams as they scoured the Brighton and Hove coastline.

Connie, the family’s brown cockapoo, was found dead on Brighton beach two days later on January 18. The next morning, the body of the 69-year-old man was found at Tide Mills, near Newhaven.

During the inquest into her death today at Brighton Coroner’s Court, DC Tessa Lovell of Sussex Police said the force received CCTV footage showing Gareth throwing herself into the sea after Connie and described the “colossal waves” that were coming.

The Argus: a huge search operation has been launched to find Gareth after his disappearanceA huge search operation has been launched to find Gareth after his disappearance

Chief Coroner Veronica Hamilton-Deeley said the high tide was 6.2 meters.

She said: “It’s a huge volume of water and almost exactly when Gareth came in to save Connie.

“In its own way, it was a heroic act.

“People say don’t go in the water after your dog, but who wouldn’t? If you love your dog as a member of your family, of course you would.

“All along the coast, from the Statue of Peace to Hove Lagoon, there is also this huge shelf that catches people. You can walk in the water at low tide and all of a sudden you’re six feet lower.

“But even without that drop, I think the state of the water that day would have made survival difficult.

“He would have been overwhelmed immediately.”

The coroner concluded that Gareth’s death was an accident and gave his cause of death as drowning in seawater.

The court heard that earlier today Gareth had bought some fish for cooking and was eagerly awaiting a night by the fire with his family watching football.

Speaking to her partner Shirley, Mrs Hamilton-Deeley said: “There aren’t many blessings, but everything he has done in the past few hours has been done with love – for you and for you. Connie.

“He was obviously an incredible guy, and completely irreplaceable.”

The Argus: Gareth Jones was described as 'remarkable' by his son RobbieGareth Jones has been called ‘remarkable’ by his son Robbie

Gareth was born in Cardiff and was an independent management consultant who had previously worked as a lecturer at universities in several countries, as well as as a human resources manager at the BBC.

After his death, tributes poured in for Gareth, who was described as a “strong and sociable” character by his family.

His son Robbie, 24, said Gareth’s local pub Watchmaker’s Arms in Hove will feature a new draft beer in honor of his father when it reopens next month.

He said: “We are happy that the investigation has been completed, as this is another important milestone.

“We just want to say how remarkable our father was and we are very grateful for all the tributes that have been paid to us.

“There have been stories from all kinds of people, be it his business friends or academics, about all the advice he has offered to people over the years.

“These are the kinds of stories we cling to.

“My sisters Rhian and Gemma both say that we are all going to be more like Gareth – which means seizing opportunities, drinking lots of beer and being kind to each other, and always supporting the underdog.”

Covid-19: People without symptoms urged to start regular tests in Brighton Brighton News

FREE rapid Covid-19 tests are now available to all residents – and people without symptoms are urged to start testing twice a week.

As lockdown restrictions are relaxed, Brighton and Hove City Council is asking everyone to get tested regularly as one in three people with Covid-19 have no symptoms.

Previously, testing kits were made available to those who could not work from home – but now all residents are encouraged to start taking tests.

Public health director Alistair Hill said it was important “not to let our guard down” as the city emerges from isolation.

He said: “Last week we saw a 50% decrease in new Covid cases compared to the previous week.

“This is great news, but we must not let our guard down. The number of confirmed cases reported are only those known to us.

The Argus: Test Kits can be picked up from Hove Town HallTest kits can be picked up from Hove Town Hall

“Because some people with Covid-19 have no symptoms, more people in the city will have the virus than these numbers show.

“As the city opens up and we mingle with more people, it’s important to make sure that we don’t spread the virus without realizing it.

“If everyone has symptom-free tests twice a week, we can find the positive cases and self-isolate to avoid transmitting the virus.

“It will help keep the number of cases low and stop the outbreaks, so we can get back to seeing the people we love and doing the things we love.”

Take-home test kits are available for collection at the Jubilee Library on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., and Sunday between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Kits can also be picked up at Hove Town Hall, Monday to Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and until 8 p.m. on Wednesdays.

People can use the NHS England site search website to find the nearest participating pharmacy offering free lateral flow testing.

Reservations do not need to be made to pick up a test kit – but only people over 18 should use the Community and Pharmacy Collection service.

Each box contains seven tests, and people can collect two boxes at a time.

Test boxes can be collected on behalf of other family members over the age of 18 and by caregivers.

All test kits include instructions on how to take the test, recording the results, and what to do if a positive test result is found.

The Argus:

NHS testing and tracing sites in the city operate as symptomatic testing sites in the morning, but currently also provide an afternoon collection service so people can take home test kits .

People are advised to use the NHS England Site Finder website to check where their nearest testing and tracing site is and hours of operation.

Those who cannot access any of these services can order test kits online or by calling 119, which will be delivered to their homes.

For anyone who does not feel comfortable taking their own home test, community testing is available and can be booked in advance at participating community pharmacies in Sussex or at the dedicated testing center at Hove Town Hall. .

These tests are performed under the supervision of a member of staff who will then process the results on site within 30 minutes.

To book a community test, brighton-hove.gov.uk/communitytesting.

Anyone who tests positive on a lateral flow test should self-isolate immediately with their focus and have a follow-up PCR test within two days.

The Argus:

Home testing and community testing are only for people who have no symptoms of the virus. Anyone with symptoms of Covid-19 should not collect a test kit or book a symptomless test and should book a PCR test online or by calling 119.

Alistair Hill added: “Even if you have received your vaccine, please self-isolate after a positive result, keep social contacts in order and get vaccinated as soon as you are invited.

“And if you have symptoms of Covid, please immediately self-isolate and take a PCR test.

“We got here by supporting and caring for each other.

“Let’s continue as the immunization program unfolds. Then we can stay on track to take advantage of the next step out of isolation when restrictions are eased again in May.

COVID: What is the variant of the South African coronavirus? Brighton News

MORE THAN 40 new cases of the South African variant of Covid-19 have been identified in south London.

A “significant” cluster of the South African variant of the coronavirus has been identified in two London boroughs, triggering new surge tests.

Wandsworth and Lambeth will see surge testing implemented after 44 confirmed and 30 probable cases have been identified.

The Department of Health and Social Affairs (DHSC) called it “the largest surge testing operation to date.”

All identified cases are in isolation or have completed isolation and their contacts have been traced.

What is the South African variant?

All viruses mutate over time, including the one that causes Covid-19.

Because of this, a genome monitoring system that would signal when new variants were recognized.

Variants native to South Africa, Brazil and Japan have all been found in the UK and several other countries and are much more likely to be identified in the coming months.

Viruses are constantly changing, and these changes can build up in the virus’s genetic code, which usually has little or no impact on it.

However, every now and then a significant change in the virus may occur, which means that it mutates in a way that is beneficial to it, such as allowing it to spread faster.

The South African variant spike protein (the part of the virus that allows it to attach to a human cell) has mutated and changed in a way that means it is now 50% more infectious, making it easier to break down. spread.

How is this different from the variant we already have?

There is no evidence to suggest that the South African variant (known as 501.V2 or B.1.351) causes more serious illness for the vast majority of those infected.

The Department of Health (DoH) has listed this as a “variant of concern” due to its rapid rate of infection and concerns about the vaccine’s effectiveness against it.

Has anywhere else in the UK identified the South African variant?

Yes, the South African variant was first seen in the UK in September 2020 when Public Health England investigated why infection rates in Kent were not declining despite national restrictions. They then discovered a cluster related to this variant spreading rapidly in London and Essex.

However, no other case of the variant has currently been identified in the UK outside of Lambeth and Wandsworth.

Will the coronavirus vaccine protect you?

Little is known about the responsiveness of the South African variant to vaccines available in the UK and it is too early to say for sure how well the vaccines will protect you.

Scientists tested the response of the Pfizer vaccine against a number of coronavirus mutations and in this study it was clear that the vaccine would still work, but it was less effective.

Moderna’s early results suggest that its vaccine is still effective against the South African variant, although the immune response may not be as strong or prolonged.

Two new coronavirus vaccines that may be approved soon – one from Novavax and one from Janssen – appear to offer some protection against the variant.

Preliminary work suggests the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine offers “limited” protection against mild illnesses of the South African variant, but experts say it should still protect against serious illnesses.

Vaccines, like viruses, can change and adapt to ensure their effectiveness – vaccines can be redesigned in the coming months if necessary.

What is the surge test?

Surge testing is increased testing (including door-to-door testing in some areas) and improved contact finding in specific locations in England.

This involves testing people who do not have any symptoms of the coronavirus being tested.
