Giant Hogweed seen in East & West Sussex – how to deal with the poisonous plant Brighton News

Poisonous plants that can cause massive blisters and ulcers have been spotted in East and West Sussex.

Giant hogweed can also cause blindness if it comes into contact with the eyes.

Now gardening retailer WhatShed has released an interactive map, allowing people to report sightings of the poisonous plant.

Known as Britain’s most dangerous plant, it has been spotted this year in Pevensey, Hastings, Westfield and Robertsbridge in East Sussex and Fernhurst, Loxwood, Horsham and Balcombe in West Sussex.

What is giant hogweed and is it dangerous?

Giant hogweed, also known by its Latin name Heracleum Mantegazzianum, is native to southern Russia and Georgia.

The plant is part of the Apiaceae family, which includes well-known vegetables and herbs like parsley, carrot, parsnip, and cilantro.

Giant hogweed was introduced to Britain and Europe in the 19th century from the Caucasus Mountains.

The first documented reference to the plant dates back to the Royal Botanic Gardens’ Kew Seed List of 1817, where the seeds of the plant were listed.

The plant itself can reach over 10 feet in height and, according to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS): “most gardeners will want to eradicate it, as it is potentially invasive and the sap can cause serious skin burns. “.

The sap contains a chemical called furocoumarin that makes the skin sensitive to the sun, which can cause nasty blisters. The blistering may even recur over months or even years.

What does giant hogweed look like?

The Woodland Trust describes the appearance of giant hogweed so you can better identify the dangerous plant.

  • Stems: the stems are green with purple spots and stiff, white hairs. The stems are hollow with ridges and a thick circle of hair at the base of each leaf stem
  • Leaves: the leaves are huge and can be up to 1.5 m wide and 3 m long, and are often divided into smaller leaflets. The Woodland Trust compares them to rhubarb leaves, with jagged, jagged edges, the underside of the leaf being described as hairy.
  • Flowers: giant hogweed flowers appear in June and July, and are small and white and appear in clusters on upward facing ‘umbrella heads’
  • Seeds: the seeds are dry, flattened and oval in shape, nearly 1 cm long and beige in color with brown lines

How to treat giant hogweed burns?

If you accidentally get hogweed sap on your skin, Healthline says you should wash the area with mild soap and cool water as soon as possible.

You should keep the skin covered when outdoors to protect it from the sun.

If a rash or blister begins to form, you should see a doctor. Your treatment will depend on the severity of your reaction.

“Skin irritation detected early can be treated with steroid cream and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, for pain relief,” says Healthline.

He adds, “Severe burns might require surgery to graft new skin over the damaged skin.”

Healthline also explains that hogweed sap can damage more than just your skin — if the sap gets into your eyes, you may experience temporary or permanent blindness. Similarly, breathing in sap particles can lead to respiratory problems.

It was for Arthur Holscher-Ermert, 27, who died at the scene after being hit by the unmarked BMW on April 30 near Bramber Avenue in Peacehaven.

Older brother Karl, 30, paid tribute to his brother, while family members from Germany and Arthur’s father, Jens Ermert, also addressed the attendees.

Karl told the crowd: “Arthur had a big heart, he touched a lot of your lives, as we all know. We came as a couple.

“Our hearts are broken right now, I’m sure many of you in this room are just as angry as we are. But today is about him and Arthur growing up with you all and living his life with you.

“We knew the soul he was, he might have been 6’4″ and a bit of a big guy but he had a heart of gold. We all know that.”

Arthur was an avid musician and even studied it at university. His family played their rap music as the motorcade arrived and also during the service.

“He found light where there was darkness, he was taken away from us. But we have to keep moving forward, today is not a goodbye.

“We’ll see him again, he’s in a better place than here. This world has been so cruel not only to him but to all of us. It’s not a peaceful world we live in.

“He should have been my best man when I got married in the future, when I had kids and when he had a kid. I’ll never have that chance, neither will any of you.

“What gives me strength is that he was lucky enough to be with a lot of your children and they know who he is.

“We have the dogs that me and Arthur raised, you will always see them in Newhaven and hopefully it will remind you that Arthur is still around.”

Reverend Betsy Gray-Hammond, who ran the service, told The Argus: “There was so much love and grief in that room, it was so tangible you could almost touch it.

“I don’t think I’ve seen such a diverse congregation in my life. It was obvious how much Arthur meant to them and how much he would be missed by his friends and family.

“Today was all about dignity, respect and helping family and friends find some peace and hope in a very dark time.”

Hove SUV tires deflated by eco warrior group Brighton News

A CAMPAIGN group said it deflated dozens of additional SUV car tires around the city as a message to politicians.

Brighton Tire Extinguishers said 50 vehicles on Hove seafront were ‘disarmed’ in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The group said politicians had taken no action to prevent people from owning large vehicles.

SUVs are controversial because they produce greater amounts of carbon dioxide than small cars.

Rachel Khar, spokeswoman for Brighton Tire Extinguishers, said: “Brighton politicians call themselves progressive and have promised to take action on the climate crisis, air pollution and road safety.

“But our city’s public transport is terrible, our roads clogged with cars and our air polluted.

The Argus: Deflated car tires in Preston Park, BrightonDeflated car tires in Preston Park, Brighton

“We are acting because our politicians don’t have the courage to make the changes we need. Our message to them is: take action, or we’ll do it for you.”

Sussex Police launched an investigation last month after claiming the tires of 250 vehicles were deflated in Brighton and Hove in one night.

Brighton Tire Extinguishers said their mission was to make it ‘impossible’ to own an SUV in urban areas, going so far as to call them ‘death machines’.

“I want to see bans on SUVs in urban areas, pollution taxes to tax SUVs, and massive investments in free and comprehensive public transport,” Rachel said.

“But until politicians make it a reality, the action of Tire Extinguishers will continue.”

The group has a handy guide to deflating tires on its website, where it also advertises that it has “no leader” and that “anyone can join”.

But SUV owners are increasingly frustrated to find their vehicles undriveable.

Inspector Nicky Stuart of the Brighton and Hove Neighborhood Policing Team said: ‘We understand the impact of these crimes on the community, and I would like to reassure the public that our officers are working hard to catch the responsible.

“We are exploring several lines of inquiry, but as always, the public is our eyes and ears.”

The group has branches in many cities, including Liverpool, Manchester and Edinburgh, as well as overseas.

Brighton throws their hat into the ring to host Eurovision 2023 Brighton News

BRIGHTON will formally express interest in hosting the Eurovision Song Contest next year after organizers concluded the contest could not take place in Ukraine.

If successful, Eurovision could come to the city for the first time since 1974, when Abba won.

Brighton and Hove City Council Leader Phelim Mac Cafferty said “it would be an honor to host Eurovision on behalf of Ukraine”.

The advice is to contact the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the BBC about the possibility of accommodation.

The Argus: Pop group ABBA congratulate each other in Brighton, after winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest for Sweden with "Waterloo"Pop group ABBA celebrate in Brighton, after winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest for Sweden with ‘Waterloo’

Leader of Brighton and Hove City Council Phelim Mac Cafferty said: “It would be an honor to host Eurovision on behalf of Ukraine.

“Of course it was at Brighton and Hove that ABBA launched their world career when they won with Waterloo at the Brighton Dome in 1974.

“We would love to see the event return to the city and share some of our lucky stardust with the next global superstars.

“We will now approach the European Broadcasting Union and the BBC to formally express our interest.

“We know that many other cities will be interested in hosting and we can’t wait to find out which city will succeed.

“After all, as ABBA said, winner takes all.”

The Argus: Ukrainian band Kalush Orchestra won this year's competition with their song StefaniaUkrainian band Kalush Orchestra won this year’s competition with their song Stefania

Traditionally, the winners of the contest host the following year’s show.

But the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) said the “security and operational” guarantees to host the event cannot be met by Ukrainian broadcaster UA:PBC amid the continued Russian invasion.

The EBU is currently in talks with the BBC to bring the 2023 contest to the UK for the first time since 1998.

Glasgow, London and Manchester are among the cities to throw their hats into the ring to host the contest if it takes place in the UK next year.

If the UK hosts, it would be the ninth time the country has hosted the competition, which will be held four times in London and once in Brighton, Edinburgh, Harrogate and Birmingham.

Hove MP Peter Kyle threw his support behind the bid and said Brighton and Hove were the “perfect city to open our arms and say ‘this is Ukraine’s show, but we’ll make them proud’ “.

He said: “We are such an open, tolerant and fun city and therefore perfectly placed to not only host a brilliant competition, but to use it to continue highlighting the crisis and supporting our refugees.

“We have the skills and the experience in such a creative city, as we have seen in hosting events from rugby to football to conferences, that I am 100% convinced that a Eurovision -by-the-Sea will be the envy of the world.”

Brighton and Hove will welcome football fans from all over the world as it hosts three matches of this year’s European Women’s Football Championship, and has already hosted Rugby World Cup matches in 2015 and party conferences policies.

A total of 19 countries have so far confirmed their participation in next year’s Eurovision Song Contest, including Greece, San Marino, Ukraine and Sweden.

Australia are also likely to return to competition once more, despite not being in Europe, having been invited to compete until at least 2023.
