Sussex pet owners warned of dangers of grit to dogs and cats Brighton News

Rock salts used on roads and pavements can cause serious harm to pets with warnings of burns, vomiting and kidney failure as the cold snap hits.

The news comes as Sussex experiences a cold snap with temperatures dropping well below freezing.

Rob Steele, of animal company PetSafe, said: “We’d like to remind pet-owners of the dangers associated with rock salt used on roads and pavements as temperatures and snow fall, and we’re urging them to be cautious.

“The rock salt, or grit, used to melt snow is very toxic to dogs – and cats. Those tiny granules can really irritate the skin on their paws – especially if they’re dry and cracked – and the chemicals that grit contains can also burn them.”

Owners have been advised to wipe down their pets’ feet and fur after they come indoors to minimise the risk.

Walking dogs away from gritted areas has also been advised. Anyone worried their pet has ingested rock salt immediately is told to contact their vet.

Theatre Royal Brighton closed for three weeks of renovation Brighton News

Refurbishment at the 216-year-old theatre in Brighton has been taking place since early last year, including the ongoing restoration of the Grade II* listed balcony and facade to its original terracotta splendour.

Theatre manager Josh Brown said: “We’ve just moved into a very exciting phase of our ongoing restoration project.

“For the next three weeks, there will be no shows on the main stage and the box office will be closed to allow us the time to replace all of the chairs in the stalls and restore the decor throughout the auditorium and foyer, including walls, paintwork and carpets.

“We are delighted that when we reopen our front doors, our customers will be able to see these improvements and their comfort and enjoyment will be instantly enhanced.”

The Theatre Royal will reopen to guests on February 5.

The Colonnade bar will remain open during the theatre’s closure, with creative learning events continuing to run as scheduled.

‘The Lionesses inspired me’ – Brighton football club seeking players Brighton News

Girls between five and 14 years old can sign up for the Brighton and Hove Foundation’s sessions, held at the Brighton Girls school in Montpelier Road on Tuesday evenings.

The foundation runs football schools across the county to encourage girls and boys to get involved in the game but this is the first time it has opened one at an all-girls school.

Women and Girls’ development officer Nathan Casselton said: “There has been a massive surge in interest in the game from girls and women since the success of the Lionesses and I believe that in a year or two, we will have as many girls as boys joining our soccer schools.

“We will have a female leader here at Brighton Girls, community coach Abbie Burrows, to run the sessions and that’s something we try to do at all our girls soccer schools because it is important that the girls have a female role model.

“It’s also important that children understand through these sessions that it’s not just all about becoming a top player either, there are so many careers around the football industry and that’s something I have spoken about in school assemblies too.

“You don’t have to be a Premier League footballer, you can work in many different roles linked to football.”

Nathan said the football schools are “the first step in a pathway” that Albion operate which could lead to playing in the club’s youth academy.

“Our girls love football and there’s a huge swell of interest in it so we are building up opportunities for them to play it.

“We are also really keen to make our facilities available to the children of the Brighton”.

Georgie Marchand, 11, said at the first session: “I play football in PE and love it so I thought the football school sounded great. I’ve seen the Lionesses play and it made me think I should give it a go and try something new. It’s great fun.”

East Sussex County Council could raise council tax again Brighton News

The warning comes ahead of East Sussex County Council’s cabinet considering this year’s budget next week before it goes to full council.

A report on the financial plan sets out a balanced budget which proposes no new cuts in 2024/25.

But this would rely on using £14 million of the council’s limited reserves to meet a shortfall for the year ahead.

The report warns that the deficit is expected to grow to £45 million in 25/26 and £61 million in 26/27, with the use of reserves no longer an option.

As well as using reserves, cabinet members will be asked to recommend a £538 million net draft budget to full council which could include a council tax increase of 4.99 per cent, needed to cover the “increase in costs and demand for the wide range of services provided to residents”.

Council tax was also raised in the budget for 2023/24 by 4.99 per cent.

The council said the increase, which includes the additional two per cent for adult social care allowed by government, would equal an additional £1.62 per week on a Band D property.

A council spokesman said: “Despite extensive lobbying by the county council, the Government’s Autumn Budget Statement contained no new funding for local authorities to meet increasing pressures but did include updates which will further increase costs.

“The cost of providing vital council services has risen sharply across the country especially for children and adults’ social care, where the impact of Covid, complexity of need, and cost of living pressures, has driven up demand. Inflation, market pressures and high profit margins by some providers in children’s services have also significantly increased costs.“

The county council has added £50 million to its annual spending for East Sussex in the budget proposed for 2024/25 to help meet these pressures, though it said it is not being funded to match the increased spending.

Referring to the use of reserves for 2024/25, the report states: “Previous robust and prudent management means we have this final safety net to see us through the next 12 months, but this is not a sustainable way to balance the budget.”

The full cabinet report is available at https://democracy.eastsussex.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=133&MId=5524

A final decision on the 2024/25 budget will be made by full council on Tuesday, February 6.

Harvester fire: Windmill Entertainment Centre repairs well under way Brighton News

The Windmill Entertainment Centre in Windmill Road, Littlehampton, has been closed for months after a large fire in the restaurant on August 10 last year.

The cinema and theatre building was damaged by smoke and the water firefighters used to put out the blaze.

Asbestos was removed from the building last year and now the internal work by Arun District Council contractors is complete.

But, while this work was being done, a leak was found above the boiler room which is now being repaired.

Council contractors are now starting work on the outside of the centre.
