Hyundai aircraft arm unveils flying taxi for 2028 Car News

Hyundai’s air mobility arm Supernal plans to put its new S-A2 aircraft into production in 2028 ahead of what it expects to be a huge increase in demand for electric aircraft as an alternative to taxis in cities.

The Supernal S-A2, described as an electrical vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, has been unveiled at CES in Las Vegas and is a follow up to the S-A1 first shown in 2020. It can seat up to five people including the pilot and is electric powered.

The styling of the S-A2 has been led by Hyundai group’s design chief Luc Donckerwolke and is described by the designer as “auto meets aero”.

The S-A2 is the latest expansion from the group beyond passenger cars, something also seen at CES by the group with the launch of Kia’s new commercial vehicle division.

The Supernal project has been led by Hyundai president Jaiwon Shin, who spent most of his career at NASA. Shin said that projections aviation industry show that there is set to be a huge expansion of eVTOL aircraft in the future, as alternatives to taxis. The market is potentially “hundreds of thousands” of aircraft of this type, compared to a total global commercial aircraft fleet today of no more than 30,000 units.

“Nobody knows yet but with the convenience, time saving and safety, people will start using these mobility options,” Shin told Autocar. “We need to be ready to meet the demand of hundreds of thousands of aircraft. We don’t know how many it will be, but this is what the aviation industry is forecasting and the advantage we have in mass production capability in the group.”

The last point is what Shin sees as a huge advantage for the Hyundai group in going into aviation: its experience of mass production of vehicles. “Traditional aviation is complex and with lots touch labour, so manufacturing is hard to compare [to automotive],” said Shin.

“How can we leverage the automotive side of mass production to aviation?” To that end, Supernal was working with the automotive division on manufacturing, as well as battery and powertrain technology and the wider Hyundai design team.

Bicester Heritage: The young and the slammed Car News

New build housing estates to my right, Porsche 911s in front of me and a bright yellow sign on my left reading ‘Bicester Scramble pre-bought tickets only’. I must be en route to Bicester Heritage’s first event of the year.

It’s pretty posh in these parts, but even I could figure out the sign really meant ‘sold out don’t waste your time unless you’ve already bought a ticket.’ I’ve been to one Scramble before. The very first one. That had around 300 people at it. Today it’s more like 7,000.

A few things have changed other than the queues to get in and out. For one, there’s new stuff. Previously it was bunker this, hanger that, but now manufacturers, such as Alpine and Polestar, have big showings. You could even take a Polestar 2 for a test drive.

The largest, palpable difference is the age of visitors though. There is a torrent of young people in every direction, a cascade of Gen Zs in baggy jeans and mullet haircuts with their phones (naturally held in portrait format) out, snapping away for Instagram, TikTok and BeReal. Ask your kids about those.

I’ve been to hundreds of classic car shows in my time and this is not generally how things are done. A typical Sunday morning run involves middle aged men, fried food in a roll and deck chairs.

How has Bicester substituted panama hats for Crocs? If anyone knows, it’s Dan Geoghegan, Chief Executive at Bicester. He’s the mastermind behind the Bicester Heritage site and was responsible for acquiring this former RAF base and transforming it into the 444 acre car theme park here today.

When I sat down with him in the central clubhouse he attracted people like Twitter users to an electric car fire. Well-wishers, colleagues, irritating journos alike. It brought memories of the often spoofed West Wing TV series featuring Martin Sheen walking through a corridor with a fleet of people vying for his attention.

“Under 30s are about one third of ticket sales. Go around a corner and it’s a complete surprise. I see things on Instagram later in the day that I’ve missed. It’s almost too big to fit into a day now.

“Social media clearly appeals to a younger audience and we do that very well. And while the show has grown, we’ve done it by intensifying the quality, not dumbing it down.

“We’re also a very young team at heart. There are 500 people on site (more than 40 companies call Bicester Heritage home) and 150-200 of those employees are apprentices. We also support a charity called Starter Motor. (which endeavours to get the generation of young people driving, maintaining and enjoying historic cars) It’s an attractive place to work.”

Kia launches new family of slick commercial EVs Car News

Kia has unveiled three bold new electric concepts that showcase a future line-up of hugely flexible vehicles, led by a multi-purpose PB5 designed to eventually offer autonomous capabilities.

The new PBV – standing for Purpose-Built Vehicle – machines revealed at CES in Las Vegas, USA, showcase the ambitions of the Korean firm to dramatically ramp up its offering of multi-purpose vehicles in the coming decade.

The vehicles will feature modular design, allowing one chassis to be used for multiple purposes. While there is a major focus on their use as commercial vehicles, they will also be sold as multifunctional passenger vehicles.

Kia has a three-phase plan to roll out its PBV assault, which will start in 2025 with the production version of the Concept PV5. Likely to reach the UK in 2026, the PV5 essentially takes the form of an ultra-sleek modern van, and features ‘easy swap’ technology inside to offer a modular, multi-function approach.

Aided by the flat floor due to the bespoke electric car platform, the PB5 can be adapted for multiple use cases, for example being used as a large taxi and, with the seats removed, as a delivery van. The one fixed element of the interior is the ‘driver zone’ cabin, with the rest customisable through the use of various interchangeable modules. For example, when in passenger mode, the area traditionally used for a passenger seat can serve as a secure area for holding luggage, while a variety of seat types can be placed in a number of layouts.

Four versions of the PB5 will be offered at launch, including a People Mover intended for carrying passengers, and a High Roof with extra headroom to maximise cargo space. There are also plans for a Robotaxi, which will eventually be able to offer autonomous shuttle services for passengers, and a Pickup version that will be offered in the US and a handful of other markets.

The second phase of the PBV rollout will be based around two further models, also shown in concept form at CES. The PB1 will be the smallest machine in the line-up, and is intended for carrying small loads in tight urban areas. The PB7 will be the largest machine in the line-up, with Kia promising that as well as extra space it will offer ‘enhanced functionalities’ in future.

As indicated by the model names, Kia is planning further PBV models to sit between the three concepts in the future. All the models will sit on a bespoke platform that uses a ‘dynamic hybrid’ modular body. This features tubular steel and engineered polymers to, Kia claims, reduce the amount of parts needed by 55 per cent with no reduction in rigidity.

Kia is also developing a range of fleet management options, including over-the-air updates, to help firms running a large number of PBVs. It is also developing a PBV Ecosystem, based around an integrated rail system on the ceiling, floor and side of the machines, that will allow items such as frames, cabinets and seats to be switched between different PBVs.

Used Lotus Evora 2011-2015 review Car News

Faster versions followed, including the S, the 400, the Sport 410, a GT410 Sport and a GT430, the last with a top speed just shy of the 200mph mark.

When it was refreshed in 2012, the cabin gained the Premium Pack as standard, improved door locks, better sound deadening and a new infotainment system.

Standard Evoras also gained the S’s thicker rear anti-roll bar, stiffer wishbone bushes and a more compelling exhaust note.

But, look, a Lotus – any Lotus – is about more than just comfort, straight-line speed and sound. It’s about handling finesse, and here the Evora excelled.

It’s one of those rare and wonderful cars that is happy to corner in whichever way its driver wants it to.

Double-wishbone suspension, Eibach springs and Bilstein dampers, brake parts by AP Racing and standard-fit Pirelli P Zeros (18in items at the front, 19s at the rear) make sure of that.

The steering has a lovely linear feel with perfect weighting, not an ounce too heavy and not too light. Without excess provocation, the Evora will grip soundly until its front wheels start to slip.

It can be provoked into a predictable, wonderfully forgiving slide. (There’s an electronic lock for the open differential.)

Switching out the traction control’s intervention completely is the point from where the Evora’s chassis really shows its mettle. In our eyes, no other production car of the time handled as well as an Evora once beyond its limits.

It rode well too, at least in its original form. In faster driving, the Evora maintains a supple ride across crests and bumps, with high levels of body control.

Only the loose, vague gearshift of the early cars lets it down, but no serious reliability issues have raised their head. The engines are still doing a shift, as is the Eaton supercharger on S models.

The Toyota-derived six-speed IPS (Intelligent Precision Shift) automatic transmission arrived in 2010. Although it exacts slight penalties on performance and efficiency, it is more reliable than the trouble-prone manual, with its slack cables.

BT converts kerbside signal cabinet into EV charger Car News

A new pilot scheme from the BT Group has begun work to convert streetside signal boxes into electric car chargers.

Run by subsidiary Etc, the programme will soon install its first charger at a cabinet in East Lothian, Scotland.

The first phase of the pilot scheme, which will comprise a small (but unconfirmed) number of converted boxes, will be used to help BT understand how to scale an EV charging business.

It believes that it could convert around 60,000 of its 90,000 cabinets across the UK into chargers.

This would bring a significant improvement in the abundance of public chargers. According to charger-mapping service Zap-Map, there were 53,029 public chargers across the UK at the end of November 2023.

Of those, 42,941 provided charging rates of between 3kW and 22kW – typical of kerbside chargers, such as those integrated into lamp-posts.

Etc senior product manager Vishal Kaduthodil explained: “The cabinets currently provide broadband to each individual household, but they’re using old technology. They’re gonna be decommissioned as we progress full fibre [broadband] across the country.

“As they’re already connected to a power source, this reduces the need to establish a new power connection, increasing deployment speed.

“We retrofit a device to split the existing power, allowing us to continue using the existing broadband whilst now also supporting a new charge point.”

Once an area has been upgraded to fibreoptic connectivity and surplus broadband cabling is removed, the cabinets could host multiple charge connectors.

That the signal cabinets are already connected to the electrical grid is a significant advantage, compared with building a bespoke charger.

Charger operators have repeatedly raised concerns about the slow pace of getting new devices connected to the grid.

Gridserve boss Toddington Harper told Autocar last April that “almost every issue of speed of implementation is down to the speed of grid connections”.

He added that grid connections could often delay the activation of a charger by “months or more”.

VW Group hails ‘encouraging’ solid-state battery tests Car News

The Volkswagen Group has revealed that new solid-sate battery cells developed by partner QuantumScape have shown encouraging results in recent tests, with a better range and significantly less degradation than both its existing lithium ion batteries and rival solid-state cells.

During the tests, run by Volkswagen Group battery division PowerCo in Germany, the cells are claimed to have experienced a minimal 5% storage capacity loss after more than 1000 charging cycles – the equivalent of 311,000 miles on the road for an electric car with a range between 311 and 372 miles, according to the German car maker.

The Volkswagen Group said current automotive industry standard targets call for 700 charging cycles and a maximum storage capacity loss of 20%.

In an official statement on the tests, PowerCo said the new cells were also able to meet requirements for other test criteria, including fast-charging capability, safety and self-discharge.

“These are very encouraging results,” said PowerCo CEO Frank Blome. “The final result of this development could be a battery cell that enables long ranges, can be charged super-quickly and practically does not age.”

Solid-state batteries replace the liquid electrolyte and separator of lithium ion batteries, both of which are considered volatile due to potential flammability, with a solid separator typically made of ceramic, polymer or glass.

VW battery pouch

QuantumScape’s in-house-developed ceramic separator is claimed to be one of the defining elements of the new cells tested by PowerCo.

The San Jose-based company delivered its first batch of 24-layer solid-state cells to its automotive partners, including the Volkswagen Group, for testing in December 2022. Since then, it has developed more advanced cells, although it has yet to reveal exact details or specification.

QuantumScape CEO Jagdeep Singh said it is seeking to place its new cells in large-scale production “as quickly as possible”.

Which brands are in best shape as ZEV mandate comes into effect? Car News

Yet this could be a case of smoke and mirrors. Vauxhall registered just 378 EVs in October, the first month of the fourth quarter, which was comfortably its lowest of the year by some margin. Is it holding back EV registrations until 2024, when they will count towards the ZEV mandate? On this evidence, it would seem so, and similar trends at Peugeot (225 EVs in October, compared with 753 in April) and Citroën (117 in October, after 370 in April) gives this argument extra merit.

Stellantis is on record as saying it will comply in 2024 without paying fines or buying credits from elsewhere; it seems it’s going to give itself a nice head start in January.

Similar seems to be occurring at Kia. In October, its EV sales total of 955 was the second lowest of the year (it sold 902 in February). In March and September (admittedly plate-change months), it was around triple that. It was closing in on 22% in September, with an 18% share of EV sales in the month. So we shouldn’t expect to read too much into Kia’s EV sales from Q4.

There are brands that will obviously be deferring their 2024 ZEV mandate requirements to future years, including Toyota. Its first EV, the bZ4X, has bombed, selling just 14 examples in October, and even in the plate-change month of September, it was only 51.

Toyota has several EVs in the works, so it’s banking on their future success, along with likely a complicated formula of trading that can be done to take advantage of an otherwise low-CO2 fleet average for ICE cars to offset lower EV sales.

We will be looking at how this could work in practice – something that also involves trading with separate ZEV credits for vans – in an upcoming Autocar Business feature.

Ford has confirmed that it will defer to future years, when the likes of the Explorer will finally hit the market and it will finally move away from being known as the Fiesta maker. The Mustang Mach-E sells okay compared with some EVs, but it still  takes only around 2-3% of Ford’s sales.

Others that are likely to follow a similar deferral path in the mid-market are early EV pioneers Renault and Nissan, which presently don’t have the cars to support a 22% market share but will do soon enough, most notably in Renault’s case with the 5. Keep your eye on the low-cost Dacia Spring to help support the mothership, too.

New electric cars coming in 2024 Car News

Read our Smart #3 review

Vauxhall Crossland

Vauxhall Crossland driving side

The new Crossland will be bigger and bolder than the current car – a proper small SUV, rather than a lifted hatchback. As with its smaller sibling, the Corsa, it will be available with petrol and electric powertrains. The latter is expected to use Stellantis’s favoured combination of a 154bhp front-mounted motor and 51kWh battery for a range of around 250 miles.

Everything we know about the Vauxhall Crossland

Vauxhall Grandland

Vauxhall Grandland camouflaged front turning

The Grandland will be reinvented as an electric SUV underpinned by the new STLA Medium platform, potentially allowing a range of more than 400 miles, as well as a rapid four-wheel-drive powertrain. It will be a similar proposition to the current Grandland but wears a more rakish roofline, and it might also take a new name.

Everything we know about the Vauxhall Grandland

Volkswagen ID 7

Volkswagen ID 7 front driving

Think of this not as a Tesla Model 3 rival but instead a much cheaper alternative to the Mercedes-Benz EQE. The ID 7 offers a hugely practical, comfortable interior, as well as ranges of 386 to 435 miles, depending on which version you opt for. Provided you can get on with the touch controls inside, it’s well worth a look at the starting price of £55,570.

Volvo EX30

This small SUV is stylish and great to drive but doesn’t live up to expectations inside. The quality is fine, but the dominance of the infotainment touchscreen system – which most crucial controls are hidden behind – sours the taste.

UK car sales hit highest level since pandemic in 2023 Car News

The UK had its best year for car sales since the pandemic in 2023, as more than 1.9 million were registered, according to new figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Growth of 289,000 over 2022’s 30-year low of 1.6 million sales was driven entirely by fleet customers, who registered 1.1 million cars alone, a 38.7% rise year on year.

The private market remained stable, with 818,000 registrations, as the cost of living crisis and high interest rates continued to bite and stalled further growth.

Last year’s numbers were still 17.7% down on 2019’s high of 2.3 million.

Despite this, SMMT boss Mike Hawes says the industry “faces 2024 with a lot more confidence and optimism” than the year before and predict it to push on further to 1.97 million.

Key to the growth was the record take-up of EVs, which accounted for one in six cars registered.

This was again driven by business and fleet buyers, thanks to the compelling tax incentives of going electric: benefit-in-kind tax rates will sit at just 2% until at least 2025.

Of the total 315,000 EVs registered in 2023 (up 50,000 on 2022), 242,235 were sent to fleets, meaning just 8.9% were private sales. In comparison, combined EV sales in 2020 and 2021 totalled 298,932.

Meanwhile, hybrids recorded 27.1% growth in 2023 to reach a 12.6% market share, while plug-in hybrids were up 39.3% (for 7.4% of the market).

Buyers again showed preference for superminis and SUVs, which accounted for 29.8% (around 86,000) and 28.6% (82,000) of total car sales. Crossovers such as the Ford Puma put in another strong showing, taking a 28.3% (81,000) slice.

These three segments have been the most popular since 2013.

“With vehicle supply challenges fading, the new car market is building back with the best year since the pandemic,” said SMMT chief Mike Hawes.

“Energised by fleet investment, particularly in the latest EVs, the challenge for 2024 is to deliver a green recovery.”

Call to halve VAT on EVs

The SMMT, backed by the automotive industry, has used the data to again call on the government to reintroduce EV incentives for private buyers after it revealed that consumer demand has flattened.

The UK is currently the only major European market without any non-business purchase incentives on EVs – but is the only market with a mandated minimum sales target through the new ZEV mandate.

As such, the lobby group wants Westminster to halve VAT on new EVs for three years, which would translate to lower purchasing costs – a similar level of support currently available to business buyers.
