Why is EastEnders not on TV tonight? See BBC schedule change UK News

The programme will not be airing during its usual time slot on Tuesday (December 5).

This is due to BBC One showing the Scotland and England women’s football game from 7.30pm tonight live from Hampden Park.

Eilidh Barbour will be presenting coverage of both teams’ sixth and final match in Group A1 of the UEFA Women’s Nations League.

This means an EastEnders episode will be shown on Friday evening (December 8) instead.

  • Monday, December 4 – BBC One, 7.30pm
  • Tuesday, December 5 – no episode due to UEFA Women’s Nations League match
  • Wednesday, December 6 – 7.30pm

Episodes will also be shown on BBC iPlayer from 6am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Confirming the news on X, formerly Twitter, @bbceastenders said: “Heads up #EastEnders fans, this week’s drama on The Square will take place on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday on @BBCOne at the usual time of 7.30pm.”

One account replied: “We need it to be 5 days a week again lol.”

“Yesss for a Friday’s epi. pls guys change back to a Friday again, swap Wednesday back to Friday instead. Hate it there’s no Friday epi,” added another.

Hoping for a permanent full week of EastEnders, someone posted: “We need Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fri back, or the whole week for EE.”

This person responded: “Please don’t tell me it’s due to sports again! (Sorry, sports fans!)”

A user asked: “Can’t you just get it up on @BBCiPlayer and let us watch it when we want?”

Inside the ‘true London oasis’ named House of the Year 2023 UK News

Named, the Green House, it’s been hailed as a “true oasis” in London as judges described the home as a “domestic greenhouse” and an “extraordinary ordinary house”.

The house is a revamped terraced home and won House of the Year by the Royal Institute of British Architects (Riba).

The five-bedroom property, tucked away down an alleyway in Tottenham and delivered by Hayhurst & Co, features polycarbonate panels and is screened with dense planting.

London home awarded House of the Year

The home is located in the Clyde Circus Conservation Area, the house also has a roof terrace and surrounding greenery, as well as roof-lights in the atrium, and was “built on a very tight budget”.

The home is owned by photographer Tom van Schelven and Amandine Neyses.

The pair used the space and ceiling height for photo shoots and as a stage for children’s drama performances, according to Riba.

The materials used include cross-laminated timber walls, which Hayhurst and Co said holds 39 tonnes of sequestered carbon, reclaimed concrete blocks and recycled cork rubber flooring that Riba says is energy efficient.

Air-source heat pumps and solar panels are also used to boost the property’s green credentials.

The house was highly commended at the 2022 British Homes Awards and won a 2021 Haringey Design Award.

Chairwoman of the jury, Dido Milne, a director at CSK Architects, said: “Green House, affectionately known as the Tottenham Riad, is a true oasis within the city. It is both airy and cosy, bold yet respectful of its neighbours.

“Your eye is simultaneously drawn upwards to the open sky and down and out across the living room to verdant greenery.

“The close architect and client relationship, with a joint desire to deliver a truly sustainable home, is evident in all of the design decisions and details.

“On a confined urban site, the house was delivered to a tight budget with an economy of means – and it remains richer for it.

“Nowhere do you feel the site or budget was restricted. It feels both luxurious, homely, deeply private and relaxing. It’s an extraordinary ordinary house and a remarkable collaboration.”

The home beat a Riba shortlist which included a renovated Devonshire cow shed, from David Kohn Architects, which featured lights once used to warm calves, and a fortress-like home on the banks of Loch Awe in Scotland from architects Denizen Works.

Last year’s winner was the Red House in Dorset.

The Killers last UK arena tour was back in 2017 with ‘Wonderful Wonderful’, they have since completed a stadium tour and headline Glastonbury for the second time in 2019.

There will be two ticket sales for The Killers, general and presale.

Fans can get access to the presale by preordering the ‘Rebel Diamonds’ album by 4pm on December 5 on the band’s official website.

If you preorder the album, you will get a special code that will give you access to the presale taking place on December 6 at 9.30am.

General sale for The Killers will take place on December 8 via Ticketsmaster and See Tickets.

How much are tickets for The Killers UK tour 2024?

Prices for the UK dates have not yet been confirmed, however, Ireland prices in Dublin start at €82.25, according to Pink News.

Brent Cross West station mural in memory of artist’s mother UK News

Time passes & still I think of you, a colourful 250sq m frieze by artist Giles Round, was unveiled on November 28 at Brent Cross West railway station.

The piece is dedicated to the artist’s late mother Margaret Round, who for a time worked in Brent Cross shopping centre.

It combines personal memories with ideas about how place is essential to our sense of identity and how the buildings around connect us with the landscapes of our lives.

The artist, who was raised in Barnet, said:  “The work is a monument to love. It is for everyone, in particular, all we have lost.”

When it opens on Sunday (December 10), the station will serve the new Brent Cross Town area, a joint venture between Barnet Council and developer Related Argent.

The artwork at the station’s eastern entrance connects to Copper Square, the centre of Brent Cross’s new business and innovation district.

It was unveiled as Barnet launches its bid to be London’s Borough of Culture for 2027.

Cllr Ammar Naqvi, Barnet Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure, arts and sports, said: “High profile artworks like the latest frieze by Giles Round at Brent Cross West help to showcase how we are building Barnet as a cultural destination.

“Our commitment to bid to become London’s Borough of Culture is about identifying and amplifying the amazing cultural offerings we already have here in Barnet, and about attracting artists, musicians and other cultural contributors to come here.”

Morwenna Hall, partner at Related Argent, said: “This is an exciting day to unveil a major piece of public art which is part of the new Brent Cross West station.

“We are committed to delivering arts and culture from the very beginning of the development for the local community to enjoy.”

Curator Phoebe Greenwood said: “Giles Round is one of the UK’s most important artists with significant permanent public artworks across the country.

“Art, Round believes, has a critical place alongside architecture and design in creating organisations and environments to help us live well. The artist’s commitment to the civic and their unique relationship to the location has brought something profoundly personal into this new public space.

“This is a vibrant artwork. Bright colour, bold geometry, scale, beauty, pleasure – these are important elements the artist enjoys working with.”

The station, located between Cricklewood and Hendon stations on the Midland Mainline, will connect the area to central London, with journey times to St Pancras taking as little as 12 minutes.

The new Brent Cross Town neighbourhood is planned as part of a wider 180-acre development around the station, with 6,700 new homes and office space for 25,000 workers, alongside a new high street.

Where to find easyJet’s airport post boxes for Santa letters UK News

This new service comes as the airline braces itself for around 200,000 families travelling during the festive period.

The new service launches today (Monday, December 4), allowing those passing through a number of airports to write and post a letter to Saint Nicholas himself.

The company is also providing a special letter collection service for local schools near the select airports.

Speaking of the scheme, easyJet pilot Hannah Wells said: “We hope our Letters to Santa postal service will bring some extra magic to the thousands of families travelling with us around the holidays and to schools in our local airport communities.”

While half of the people travelling this Christmas are flying to see friends and family, one in five are opting to escape the snow and cold weather for a sunshine break, according to the airline’s own research.

What airports will have easyJet’s letters for Santa post boxes?

The special easyJet post boxes for letters to Santa will be available for travellers passing through London Gatwick, Luton, Bristol and Manchester.

There will also be post boxes available at popular foreign airports like Paris Charles de Gaulle, Naples, and Milan.

According to the travel company, it is operating its biggest-ever schedule from the UK to Lapland with services to Rovaniemi taking place up to four times a week from Bristol, London Gatwick, Luton, Edinburgh, and Manchester, and to Kittila up to two times a week from London Gatwick and Manchester.

In recent weeks, the airline has also announced several new flight routes to and from European airports, linking flyers with some of the continent’s biggest Christmas markets.

Dinner on board an old Victoria Line tube: Review UK News

The concept, both daring and innovative, has welcomed more than 10,000 people on board since Supperclub first opened the restaurant in 2018.

To get the full immersive experience, we travelled to the restaurant on no other than the Victoria Line – all the way from Brixton to Walthamstow Central.

Now, after sitting on a real underground tube line for more than half an hour, I was sceptical on how my experience would be.

Eating food on the underground is my idea of a nightmare – dozens of sweaty people fighting for a seat combined with the smell of a tuna and onion baguette isn’t something that particularly tickles the tastebuds.

But to my surprise, dining on the Supperclub. Tube was like being transported into a first-class, high end tube line which I can only envision people like Madonna and Donald Trump would be able to use.

The ambiance was surprisingly intimate, considering the unconventional setting.

The 1967 Victoria line carriage was fascinating – the old-style seating arrangements were still on brand with TfL’s horrendously boring tube line designs, but a perfectly placed table sat between seats which was illuminated by a soft light.

The décor seamlessly blended industrial elements with modern chic, creating an atmosphere that felt trendy, exclusive, and pretty bizarre.

We took to our seats located in the centre of the tube line, admired the buzzy atmosphere from other tube-diners, and looked over what interesting food we were about to sink our teeth into.

The six-course taster menu, a testament to the chef’s creativity, was inspired by traditions of Latin American countries which centred around – take a guess – corn.

From small plates like Sopa Azteca (tomato and chipotle soup), to Ceviche de Bacalao (line cured cod), each dish was a carefully crafted masterpiece.

One standout was the Carimanolas de queso (cassava and white corn croquettes filled with mozzarella and cheddar cheese), a play on the classic dish featuring yellow chilli sauce.

As the courses progressed, I couldn’t help but marvel at the seamless integration of the dining experience with the other commuters (diners).

Everyone seemed to be lost in conversation and enjoyed each dish like no tomorrow; if every tube line was this relaxed, Londoners would be falling in love left, right and centre.

My favourite taster dish of the night was the Ropa Vieja (Cuban style shredded brisket), which quite literally melted in my mouth and paired perfectly with the sweet potato hash brown, rice, and sweetcorn.

Service was impeccable on the Supperclub. Tube, with a knowledgeable and attentive chef who greeted each diner and explained the menu staff guiding guests through the culinary journey.

In conclusion, dining on an underground tube line proved to be a truly remarkable experience, pushing the boundaries of standard dinner settings.

The experience gave the real underground a run for its money, proving that if life (TfL) gives you delays, make a dinner reservation on the Supper. Club tube.

Why is London called London? How the capital got its name UK News

So much so that the word London has practically lost its meaning and now stands as another word amongst the great many.

Yet beyond the word that is the name of the capital, there is a lot more to it.

Once upon a time, a group of people had to come up with the name that would later become the centre of the UK.

Whether you think about it daily or never give it a second thought, the story behind how London got its name is an interesting fact that just might give you a new insight into the capital.

How did London get its name?

There is a lot of application to how London got its name, and whilst there is no final answer, there are several possibilities that people stand by.

Starting with the Romans and the most likely option, it is believed they called the land Londinium.

After finding what we now know as London, in 43 AD, the Romans created a fort in ‘Londinium’ which was discovered by archaeologists in 2016. 

Unfortunately, only the Romans know why the name was picked and sadly we can’t ask them.

Aside from the Roman theory, there is another idea, with suggestions from 12th-century author Geoffrey of Monmouth that London was named after a mythical King.

Geoffrey of Monmouth believed that the capital was named after King Lud, which makes ‘Karelud’ aka ‘the fortress of Lud’.

Later on in history, some writers suggested that the Celtic war leader known as Londions gave the capital its namesake.

Whilst others believe that the Celtics made the name London based on the word Lowonidonjon.

Another Celtic idea comes from the name Londinion which is understood to be inspired by the name of a local chieftain, or the Celtic word lond which means ‘wild’.

Met Office issues yellow warning for ice in London UK News

The warning is in place from midnight until 8am on Sunday for London, the East of England, the West Midlands and parts of South Wales.

The weather service warned that areas of rain or sleet falling on frozen surfaces may lead to icy conditions and some injuries may result from slips and falls.

The temperature is expected to drop as low as -3° tonight in Greater London.

The Met Office added: “Rain or sleet is expected to spread from west to east across the area overnight, falling on to frozen surfaces and leading to icy patches, perhaps even where treatment has been applied.

“Keep yourself and your family safe when it is icy. Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal.

“Not needing to rush, reduces your risk of accidents, slips, and falls. If you need to make a journey on foot or by bike, try to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery.

“Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

“Be prepared for weather warnings to change: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”

Islington Council powers Christmas lights with electric van UK News

The White Cross Street festive lights switch-on celebration was held by the council on Friday (December 1) wherein a fully electric refuse collection van (RCV) was used to power the lights and PA system for the first time.

The event included live music from local talent at Soapbox, Prior Weston and St Luke’s primary schools, face-painting and crafts for kids, free mince pies for all and mulled wine for adults.

The van reportedly belongs to council’s new fleet of 92 vehicles that are meant to cut down carbon emissions.

Councillor Rowena Champion, Islington Council’s Executive Member for Environment, Air Quality, and Transport said each of the RCVs will save the council over 17,000 litres of diesel per year which equates to around 45 tonnes of CO2 savings.

Claudia Winkleman to step down from BBC Radio 2 show UK News

The Strictly Come Dancing co-host revealed the news to listeners live on Radio 2 this morning (December 2).

Comedian Romesh Ranganathan will launch a new Saturday morning show from 10am until 1pm in April 2024.

Claudia first joined Radio 2 in spring 2008 to host Hot Gossip, a comedy quiz series, before moving to Friday nights to host the Claudia Winkleman Arts Show.

In 2016, she presented Claudia on Sunday and then moved on to Saturday mornings in February 2021.

Claudia will present her last weekly programme on the station in March 2024.

She said: “I absolutely love Radio 2 and it’s been a privilege to host the Saturday morning show for three years.

“I will miss our amazing guests, our brilliant listeners and the one and only Sally Traffic.

“The truth is my children are growing up inordinately fast so I have decided to follow them around at home before they leave for good.

“I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who works on the show, I will continue to visit with badly made biscuits and will pester the bosses to present the odd special.

“I couldn’t be happier that Romesh is taking over Saturday mornings on Radio 2.

“He is brilliantly laugh out loud funny, and I’ll listen every single week as my kids beg me to leave them alone.”
