Heinz Tomato Ketchup will be made in the UK for the first time in more than 20 years after its parent company announced plans to spend $ 199million (£ 140million) on its food factory near Wigan.
Investment plans at the Kitt Green factory in the north-west of England would see mayonnaise and salad cream being made there, as well as soups, pasta and baked beans.
Fifty full-time jobs will be created as part of the proposed modernization of what is the largest food manufacturing site in Europe, which already manufactures 1.3 billion cans each year, including three million cans of baked beans every day.
The plan, which is still “subject to final US approvals,” would see the production of Heinz sauces in the UK for the first time since 1999.
It would be Kraft Heinz’s largest manufacturing expansion outside of North America in more than two decades.
Gerry Grimstone, UK Investment Minister, said: “Kraft Heinz’s investment is a vote of confidence in the UK economy of a large US company and a boost that will translate into jobs and growth. for the local economy. “
In December 2019, the company announced that a dozen jobs were at risk at the plant after restructuring, with some of those roles apparently shifting to the Netherlands.
