The cash machines operated by the government-run Northern Trains were taken out of service by an alleged cyberattack intended to extort money.
The servers that run the ATMs were the only system affected, the company said in a statement.
“This is the subject of an ongoing investigation with our provider, but it appears that the parking meter service has been the subject of a cyber attack by ransomware,” he said.
Northern Trains said no customer or payment data had been compromised and customers could still purchase tickets online.
The franchise, which runs trains between cities in northern England including Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield, was nationalized in 2020 after years of delays, cancellations and strikes.
