London flood chaos: Urgent raw sewage warning issued as eight tube stations close | United Kingdom | New UK News

Londoners have been warned to stay away from flood water as it could be “mixed with raw sewage from overloaded sewers”. Shocking footage of Hackney Wick in east London showed a man kayaking through a flooded yard to reach a road.

Another showed someone using a plank of wood to kayak around a parking lot submerged in water.

And a video taken by a passenger at Pudding Mill Lane DLR station near Stratford, east London, showed floodwaters pouring in and rapidly ascending steps.

Social media users urged people not to walk through the flooding as rainwater could be mixed with untreated sewage.

One man tweeted: “Recall, in urban areas floodwater is almost always mixed with raw sewage from overloaded sewers, especially in London where the Thames Tideway project to increase capacity is not complete.

“So basically don’t touch the flood waters.”

He added: “I know that makes me a killjoy but also the water is opaque and full of obstacles, you really don’t really want to cut yourself in an open sewer.”

Parts of Gants Hill Station on the Central Line were also inundated following the massive downpours this afternoon.

Metropolitan Police have warned drivers that there will be “serious disruptions” on the North Circular tonight.

It was one of eight London stations closed by Transport for London due to wet weather.

Other videos shot by drivers and car passengers showed vehicles driving through flooded streets in Leyton and Walthamstow.

And in the Stratford Mall, stunned shoppers watched security guards attempt to mop up the floods.

Water appeared to have entered several stores after walking down a hallway.

Photos showed part of the center cordoned off.

A passerby captured the dramatic moment when strangers worked together to push cars off a flooded road from Cranbrook to Ilford, east London.

The Met Office has issued an orange warning for storms covering London and some of the Home Counties where buildings are at risk of flooding, until 7 p.m. Sunday.

A yellow warning for storms that could cause travel and electricity disruptions also covers a wider area south from Norwich to Plymouth, and lasts until midnight.

Met Office meteorologist Steven Keates said parts of the south between southern Suffolk and the Isle of Wight could be inundated with 100mm of rain in just a few hours on Sunday evening.

He warned: “There are still torrential thunderstorms.

“In the evening, from Norfolk to Bournemouth, we will see some pretty sharp showers.

“Torrential downpours, thunder and lightning and potentially hailstones are settling in the south.”

The Environment Agency has issued two flood warnings for areas of London near Beverley Brook in Worcester Park and West Barnes.
