Government accused of sneaking in Covid passports after updating NHS app Bedford News

The government has faced calls for recall from parliament over concerns.

Former Liberal Democrat Minister Alistair Carmichael accused the government of “stealthily pledging to vaccine passports” and said parliament should be reminded from recess to discuss the measure.

An adjustment to the wording of the NHS Covid Pass section has raised concerns as it now includes a ‘domestic’ section, which reads: ‘You may need to show your NHS Covid Pass at places that have chosen to use the service. “

More than 40 Conservative MPs signed a statement expressing their opposition to the idea.

Transportation Secretary Grant Shapps said some companies will require their staff to be fully vaccinated, but the government will not legislate.

He also confirmed on July 30 that while partygoers will need proof of vaccination to enter nightclubs later this year, there will be no need to go to the pub.

Mr Shapps told ITV’s Good Morning Britain: ‘We will not go so far as to require (proof of vaccination) to enter a store or pub.

“We go for very close contacts like going to nightclubs – other countries are for international travel – so I think there are few valuable reasons not to get the vaccine, all good reasons to to get vaccinated.

“Why wouldn’t we want to save lives? It’s just obvious to me.

He said he was unsure why the issue is “particularly controversial”, due to the high number of people who have already received jabs.

Mr Shapps also said the government is unlikely to move on August 16 for people in England who are doubly vaccinated no longer having to self-isolate if a contact is positive for Covid, despite the pressure as other countries prepare to abandon the rule sooner.
