Aston Martin Valkyrie Spider: the V12 hypercar becomes convertible Car News

The new open-top version of Aston Martin’s Valkyrie hypercar would offer “the most comparable experience to that of a Formula 1 car not limited to the track.”

Revealed at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance as part of Monterey Car Week in California, United States, the Valkyrie Spider is limited to just 85 units, a build series that Aston says is already “oversubscribed” before deliveries to customers from mid-2022. . Right-hand and left-hand drive models will be available.

This is the third Valkryie derivative to be presented, after the almost ready standard coupe and the track-only AMR Pro coupe.

This is a unique opportunity for a new open-top, combustion-engine hypercar, as the Valkyrie’s closest rivals, the McLaren Speedtail and Mercedes-AMG One, are sold only as coupes.

The power output of the hybrid V12 developed by Cosworth is unchanged, at 1,160bhp, and revisions to the carbon fiber tub and hypercard aerodynamics package ensure the Spider is tightly matched to the hardtop in terms of performance.

Active aerodynamics and chassis elements have been recalibrated to suit the new car shape, while the weight penalty – typically a trap of convertible models – is kept to a minimum through the use of a carbon fiber roof section and roof windows in polycarbonate.

The most significant change is the replacement of the Valkyrie’s ravine-style center hinged doors with front hinged doors – a first for Aston Martin.

With these modifications in place, Aston Martin claims a “just marginal” weight difference and claims the Spider will exceed 217 mph, or 205 mph with the roof removed.

The British firm has not yet built and tested a physical prototype but claims that development is “well advanced”, thanks to its “powerful simulation tools”.

Aston Martin CEO Tobias Moers said the Spider takes “the passion and emotion of the Valkyrie to the next level” and that he “can’t wait to hear” the mid-engine spin at its red line of 11,000 rpm with the roof removed.
