Ridiculously good for a five, this light-bodied red is crisp and vibrant with a sweet hint of fragrant red fruit and a tinge of graphite. The family of Charlotte Lemoine, the Tesco buyer, is from Beaujolais: maybe that’s why she knows how to find such a good wine?
The Marinière Muscadet 2020
France (11.5%, Waitrose, £ 6.49)
Muscadet has fallen into disuse because white wine drinkers who like this dry and dry marine style have instead flocked to picpoul. But as this wine proves, Muscadet now looks much better value for money. This one is like sweet lemon clouds with a salty touch.
Domaine de Mandeville Viognier 2020

One of the most charming whites (and the most unappealing labels) on M&S shelves, it marries a delicious, subtle scent of peach and jasmine with a clean, lemony vibe. Absolutely not a heavy or slow viognier, it is crisp and fresh.

Marcillac, France (13%, The Wine Society, £ 9.50)
A distinctive and clear red made in the southwest of France from the fer servadou grape, this is a red with the bloody flavor of iron and it looks great with lamb kebabs, steak and fries, a salad. green with a very mustard vinaigrette or cheese pasta.

A Gamay which is not from Beaujolais but from the ancient volcanic terroir of Côtes du Forez, an appellation in central France near the source of the Loire. Sweet, almost unbelievably juicy, and bursting with crushed berry flavors.
Domaine Catherine & Pierre Breton Trinch Bourgueil 2019
Loire, France (13.5%, thesourcingtable.com, £ 18)
Cabernet franc from Loire that evokes the shimmer of new leaves, summer berries and the grain of dry earth. It is produced biodynamically in the Bourgueil region and goes wonderfully with pink lamb or duck.
Daniel Chotard Sancerre 2019
France (13.5%, Berry Bros & Rudd, £ 19.95)
A Sancerre which is in a warm and waxy register rather than flint and herbaceous, it is all orange and lemon blossom and yellow stone fruits. Jancis Robinson has already pointed out that he has characteristics reminiscent of a Cotat Sancerre and I agree.

Loire, France (13%, Lay & Wheeler, £ 20.68)
From a legendary estate, here is a dry Loire Chenin Blanc that is tangy and appetizing, with classic flavors of Bramley and floral quince but also something else. An elementary wine that manages to be precise and airy.
