So that’s Rallies. The 106 GTi, launched in 1996, is a more rounded affair. Like the S2 Rallye, it is powered by a 1.6 liter engine, but this time with 16 valves and an output of 117 hp. At 950 kg, it is the heaviest of the three models, but its greater power means it is also the fastest. Back then, it was also the more expensive, the extra money to buy that more powerful engine, power steering, smarter alloy rims, and a body kit. Early Phase 1 cars had cloth seats, but Phase 2 models got a mix of Alcantara and leather. Fortunately, despite its various comforts, the GTi is just as fun to ride a B-road as its Rallye siblings. That said, today Rallies are the most sought after, but if you find a good GTi for a decent price, go for it.

“We have been servicing, modifying and racing Peugeot for years. My favorite era is the 1990s, and among the cars produced at the time, the 106 GTi stands out. This is the one I would have on the two Rallye models. Lighter but with a powerful engine, it can compete with a 306 GTi-6. Still, the Rallies have been very good, and you don’t really have to do anything to have fun. The S2 was brilliant right out of the box, but I prefer the terrier-like responses of the S1. Rust is the number one enemy of rallies and GTis. It’s bursting everywhere, so don’t be fooled by a beautiful paint job. For rallies, genuine parts, including the S1’s red airboxes and seat belts, are hard to find.
