People Director of Burger King UK, Jeremy Wright, said: “During these very challenging few years for many businesses, we are thrilled to create new employment and career opportunities in the region, and we look forward to welcoming 34 new entrants to the Burger King family. , in our new Sunderland restaurant. .

“We continue to be bold and ambitious in our plans for growth across sites and employment opportunities.”

Alisa3 Developments Ltd has submitted a bid to convert vacant land on the former industrial area of Salterfen into the Ryhope district in 2020, as the site had previously been vacant for several years. Soon after, councilors backed new plans for a commercial development which is expected to create around 83 jobs.

However, the plans have not been without controversy, with several letters raising concerns about litter, traffic, road safety, potential noise and devaluation of nearby properties.

One of the drive-thru lanes has also been widened following concerns about queuing traffic spilling onto the freeway during rush hour.

As it stands, the closest Burger King outlets to Sunderland are at White Mare Pool in Gateshead and Washington Services in Chester-le-Street.
