England’s only tea grower surprises with record 600 blooming flower species | UK | News UK News

Tregothnan, at Tresillian in Cornwall, completed its annual count on New Year’s Day and was surprised at the figures.

Head gardener Neil Bennett, 53, also found 51 camellia sasanquas plus the 24 varieties of tea that make the site Europe’s largest tea garden.

The tea flowers will take 10 months to produce seeds and will then be left to germinate before cuttings are taken.

Boss Jonathon Jones, 52, said it has taken 15 years “to be happy with the taste” of his tea.

He added about the count: “We were expecting a low number. It took most of the day to count 600 flowers.”

Tregothnan produces 30 to 40 teas – including herbal infusions. The Boscawen family has held the estate since 1334 and it claims to have been home to the UK’s first outdoor camellias during the 19th century.
