Footage from the scene showed a car engulfed in flames, with a thick cloud of gray smoke billowing in the air.
Fire crews were called and worked quickly to put out the blaze.
A spokeswoman for the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Services said: “We were called at 6:38 pm to witness a car fire on the A27 towards the Falmer stop.
“The Preston Circus and Roedean firefighters were there.
“Two breathing apparatuses, a hose reel jet and a foam jet were used to extinguish the fire.
“It was an accidental ignition.
“One lane on the A27 was closed for a short time, but it has now been reopened. Firefighters have left the scene.
“There are no casualties.”
