JOE ROOT scored his first hundred of the season, and Adam Lyth, his second, as Yorkshire continued to dominate their county championship game against Kent at Canterbury.
The England Test captain reached 101, his first triple-figure score since his double century in his 100th Test appearance against India in February.
Lyth scored 116, the pair shared 119 for the third wicket, as Yorkshire declared 330-5 in their second inning, leaving the hosts 445 to win from a low of 108 overs.
They closed at 33-2, with Daniel Bell-Drummond undefeated at 24.
Root, who confirmed that he will play in the game in Sussex starting Thursday, and possibly more championship matches before the first Test against New Zealand on June 2, said: “I felt like I didn’t really contribute last week (against Glamorgan ), so it was nice to get some runs.
“You want to lead the way in many ways and set a good example for the rest of the guys, so it was good to be able to follow that today.
“Hopefully I can continue in good shape for the rest of the games I play for Yorkshire.
“I’ll play Sussex and possibly a few more (championship) games after that.”
Resuming 171-2 after tea, following an 80-minute break in play to coincide with the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral, Yorkshire racked up comfortably late in the afternoon.
Root, 35 in the tea, reached his 84-ball half-century with four fours, and the total had reached 218 when Lyth, 101 in the interval, was finally eliminated.
The left-hander led Matt Milnes to Jordan Cox in coverage, having scored 116 of 169 balls with 15 fours.
Lyth hit 97 in the first inning and now has 380 runs in two championship games, having had 52 and 115 not away against Glamorgan last week.
Root’s Century, hitting 138 balls with seven fours, was his 31st in first-class cricket and the eighth for Yorkshire.
His previous first-class century for the county came in 2019 when he scored an undefeated 130 against Notts at Trent Bridge.
Root dropped a ball after bringing up the milestone, thrown by Joe Denly as he tried to smash the roulette wheel in the middle of the wicket.
Root added 96 in 15 overs with Harry Brook, who made his third half century this season in four Championship innings, scoring 66 unbeaten of 60 balls with 10 fours and six.
Yorkshire declared when Jordan Thompson was thrown to six by Denly, the most successful pitcher at 2-61.
David Willey hit the third envelope of Kent’s second inning, producing an excellent yorker that sent Cox back for a duck.
The home team fell to 33-2 when Thompson had Zak Crawley caught by Lyth on the second slip of four.
