Oscars 2021: Awards to kick off with in-person ceremony in Los Angeles as ten British names compete Bedford News

The movie stars are gearing up for the 93rd Academy Awards – with ten British names in the race for success.

The Oscars finally take place tonight after the setbacks caused by the February pandemic.

The prizes will be held in person primarily in Los Angeles with two other international venues in London and Paris.

Other big awards, which had virtual elements in the midst of the health crisis, suffered steep audience drops.

The Golden Globes fell to a 13-year low in audience figures and the Grammys recorded their lowest audience ever; commentators predicted the Oscars could see a similar drop in viewership.

Where will the ceremony take place?

The ceremony itself will take place primarily at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, with some events taking place at the Oscars’ usual home, the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.

Some nominees will come from international countries, notably London and Paris.

Attendees have been told that they will not be required to wear masks when in front of the camera, although the producers have promised that the masks will have a role to play in the broadcast.

Which Britons are in the running?

It could be a good evening for local talent – in the 20 categories of actors, eight nominees are British.

Father’s Sir Anthony Hopkins, Sound Of Metal’s Riz Ahmed, and Mank’s Gary Oldman are all up for Best Actor.

Daniel Kaluuya is widely tipped to win Best Supporting Actor for his role in Judas And The Black Messiah, in a category also containing The Trial Of The Chicago 7-star Sacha Baron Cohen.

Carey Mulligan – star of the revenge thriller Promising Young Woman – is nominated for Best Actress, alongside Vanessa Kirby for Pieces Of A Woman.

Former Oscar winner Olivia Colman is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for The Father.

Behind the camera, Emerald Fennell is nominated for Best Director for her directorial debut Promising Young Woman while Cornish cinematographer Joshua James Richards is nominated for his work on Nomadland.

Who hosts the Oscars?

Presenters include Brad Pitt, Regina King and Harrison Ford – but there won’t be a host this year.

They will be joined by other A-listers, including Oscar winners Laura Dern, Regina King, Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon.

The ceremony, this year featuring one of the most diverse nominee groups of all time, will take place early Monday morning UK time.

Given the time difference, this means that for UK viewers the show will start at 1 a.m. and continue until around 4 a.m. to 5 a.m. in the early hours of Monday April 26.

The ceremony will be broadcast live in the UK on the Sky Cinema Oscars channel, with coverage starting at 12:30 p.m. on Monday 26 April.

Which films are likely to win?

Nomadland, with Frances McDormand, is the frontrunner for Best Picture, but there is an eclectic mix of films for the top prize.

They include the black-and-white ode to old Hollywood, Mank, and the audience drama The Trial Of The Chicago 7.

The others are Judas And The Black Messiah, The Father, Minari, Promising Young Woman and Sound Of Metal.

The late American actor Chadwick Boseman is the favorite to posthumously win the Best Actor award, for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
