Clubbers have returned to the dance floor after more than a year of waiting – for a pilot COVID security event in Liverpool.
Some 6,000 revelers are expected at the First Dance event, which runs for two nights starting Friday at the city’s warehouse nightclub, Circus.
COVID updates live from UK and around the world
At 2 p.m. on Friday, as it opened to thunderous music, delighted clubbers walked through the doors cheering.
Ticket holders didn’t need to socially get away or wear face masks, but they needed proof of a negative COVID test result before being allowed to enter.
The event is part of the National Events Research Program (ERP) to see how venues can safely reopen.
The program saw 8,000 fans enter Wembley Stadium to watch Manchester City take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup final last weekend following a precedent. successful semi-final attempt.
Sky correspondent in the north of England, Katerina Vittozzi, was at the nightclub opening, with 3,000 participants on Friday and another 3,000 on Saturday.
One participant said she felt “like a kid on Christmas Eve” as she got ready to go out.
Ashleigh, 19, and Katie, also 19, were among the first to walk through the door.
“The atmosphere is just amazing,” said Ashleigh.
“We were able to get out of bars and pubs, but the vibe at an event is so different.”
Katie added: “We missed it and this one was done so well – everyone tested negative to enter.
“You feel so much safer. And the DJs seem so happy to be performing in front of a crowd again.”
