The Mercedes-AMG One hypercar appears to have entered the final stages of testing, with a road-registered prototype spotted in public for the first time.
It has been almost four years since Mercedes first revealed the 1,000-hp-plus One, and development has reportedly been hampered by delays over the complexity of adapting its F1-derived hybrid powertrain for the street. . The latest footage follows the recent release of an official video, which showed the long-awaited Ferrari rival SF90 – in its now familiar prototype livery – driving at high speed around a test track, and gives a overview of its complete aerodynamic package and cabin. design. The 1,000-hp-plus all-wheel-drive model, which uses a 1.6-liter V6 hybrid adapted from that of the championship-winning Mercedes-AMG’s 2017 Formula 1, was originally planned for early 2019. It is understood that the date was pushed back due to engineering challenges that involved getting the complex powertrain to meet WLTP emissions standards by using a gasoline particulate filter without compromising performance.
Problems also arose with the F1-based engine’s idle speed, which is around 5,000 rpm in race specs. Engineers were tasked with running the unit properly at an idle speed of around 1,200 rpm, described as a “huge challenge”.
Development goals include the engine delivering “perfectly in terms of daily performance” and being able to run only in all-electric mode for up to 16 miles. It is not yet clear whether the car will be able to meet the concept’s performance requirements of a top speed of 218 mph and 0-124 mph in six seconds.
The firm is likely to attempt some sort of lap record at the Nurbürgring once tuning is complete.
The One retained much of the design of the 2017 concept car. Minor revisions to the aerodynamic functions are visible and could still change ahead of production, with track tests focusing on the calibration of active aero components such as the awnings, the air outlets in the front fenders and the rear spoiler.
More details on the Unique have yet to be given. However, customers have been told to expect their cars to be delivered “throughout” 2021.
Only 275 copies will be produced, and all have now been sold for a price of 2.27 million euros (2.06 million pounds sterling).
