The number of people in England awaiting hospital treatment has reached a new record, according to the latest figures.
A total of 4.95 million people were waiting to start treatment at the end of March 2021, according to NHS England – the highest number since records began in August 2007.
The number of people who had to wait more than 52 weeks to start hospital treatment stood at 436,127 in March 2021, the highest number in all calendar months since August 2007, when it stood at 578,682.
As of March 2020, the number of patients who had to wait more than 52 weeks to start treatment was only 3,097.
