This year’s Glasgow climate summit is last hope to limit global warming, Minister warns | Climate News

The COP26 climate conference is “our last hope” to limit global warming to 1.5 ° C.

That will be the president’s warning from the Glasgow summit on Friday, as world leaders prepare to discuss the situation between November 1-12.

Cabinet Minister Alok Sharma will say: “This is our last hope to keep 1.5 ° C alive. Our best chance to build a better future. A future of green jobs and cleaner air.”

He will add: “I am convinced that the leaders of the world will rise to the occasion and that they will not fail to meet fate.

“That in six months, when we pack our bags and return home, we can say that at this critical time, each of us has taken responsibility.

“That we have chosen to act and that we have kept 1.5 ° C alive.”

Mr Sharma will say he enlisted the help of his daughters to create a message to convey to world leaders, adding: “Their response was simple – ‘please tell them to choose the planet’.

“And that’s the message I want to leave with you today.

“A message from my daughters, a message from future generations.

“This is our moment, there is no second chance.

“Let’s choose the planet.”

Sharma will also encourage conference attendees to quit coal, adding, “We are working directly with governments and through international organizations to end international funding for coal.”

Kate Blagojevic, Climate Officer at Greenpeace UK, said: “The UK cannot claim climate leadership overseas while at home the government continues to run a new coal mine in Cumbria or maintains the bloc planning on English onshore wind power.

“With only six months to go, time is running out, if the government is to be the climate leader, it is time for it to act like this.”
