The London Underground is preparing for the return of thousands of workers from the city by reopening “The Drain” between Waterloo and Bank stations.
The Waterloo & City line, which has been closed for 14 months, will reopen on June 21, Transport for London has announced.
He issued a statement before Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned of “disruption” of reopening the economy in light of new strains of Covid-19.
The line was opened in 1898 and has become known for its long lines at the country’s busiest land train station.
It carries 15 million passengers per year and is the second busiest after the Victoria line.
Tube bosses must offer additional peak services to meet the needs of bankers, lawyers and accountants who are unable to adjust their working hours.
Catherine McGuinness, Head of Policy, City of London Corporation, said: “The reopening of the historic Waterloo & City line is vital to the restoration of the Square Mile.”
Meanwhile, the rail companies will add 2,500 additional daily services from Sunday.
