G7 Summit: Police officers protect Cornwall politicians to stay aboard cruise ship | UK News

About 1,000 police officers recruited to protect the G7 summit in Cornwall next month are to be accommodated on a cruise ship with a capacity of 3,100 people.

Sky News has learned that Devon and Cornwall Police have hired the MS Silja Europa, which has more than 1,150 passenger cabins.

The cruise ship, currently moored in Tallinn, Estonia, will be moored in Falmouth for 10 days and used by the police for accommodation, food and other ‘essential facilities’.

A spokesperson for the Devon and Cornwall Police for planning the G7 said: ‘We will be deploying more than 6,500 officers and employees at this event and we are supporting a wide range of local businesses and suppliers as part of our extensive logistical arrangements.

“This includes the use of over 4,000 rooms at nearly 200 locations across Devon and Cornwall, which will support local communities and welcome police and staff deployed across the UK.

“In order to secure more core capabilities, we have looked at a number of options and recently agreed to hire MS Silja Europa, managed by Tallink; taking into account the impacts on the environment, the community, operational needs and those of our officers and staff. . “

The MS Silja Europa, described by Tallink as “the biggest and the most beautiful cruise ship in the Baltic” is generally used for cruises in the Baltic.

It offers seven restaurants and cafes, a nightclub, a concert hall and a full spa and beauty salon.

But Sky News understands that bars aboard the cruise ship will not be open – only restaurants being available to agents.

The theater will eventually be used for daily police briefings.
