Martin Bashir says he “deeply regrets” his action after a report revealed he used “deceptive behavior” to secure his 1995 Panorama interview with Princess Diana.

Lord Dyson’s investigation concluded that the journalist had violated BBC rules by faking fake bank statements and showing them to DianeEarl Spencer’s brother to gain access to the princess.

Martin Bashir’s reaction

In response to the results, Mr. Bashir apologized, saying that tampering with bank statements was “a stupid thing to do and an action I deeply regret.”

But he added that he felt it had “nothing to do with Princess Diana’s personal choice to participate in the interview.”

What did Diana’s brother claim?

Earl Spencer claimed that in the weeks leading up to the program, Mr Bashir showed him fake bank statements related to alleged payments made to his sister’s former private secretary Patrick Jephson and another former royals by security services.

The documents incorrectly suggested that individuals were paid to keep the princess under surveillance.

Mr. Bashir also showed him mock documents, relating to a former employee of the Earl, which Mr. Bashir also used in an attempt to gain access to the princess.

What are the main findings of the new report?
