Police investigate death of newborn baby found in Walsall Canal | UK News

Police are investigating the death of a newborn baby found in a Walsall canal.

The boy was found at Rough Wood Country Park near Hunts Lane in Willenhall on Thursday afternoon.

“Unfortunately, it has been confirmed that the baby, believed to be a newborn, is dead,” West Midlands Police said.

“We are now investigating these sad circumstances to find out exactly what happened and if anyone was injured.”

A member of the public spotted the baby around 1 p.m.

The police call witnesses and try to find the mother of the child.

West Midlands Police Detective Inspector Wes Martin said: “This is a tragic investigation and our priority now is to find the mother of the baby to make sure she is okay.

“She may need urgent medical attention and she is our top priority right now.

“We have spoken to members of the public and urge anyone with information to contact us.”

Police asked people not to speculate on what happened, saying it hampered the investigation and “bothered those involved.”

Anyone with information should call 101, citing the 1963 newspaper issue of May 20.
