Tommys built in Sussex to commemorate World War I Brighton News

Full-size statues of British Army soldiers have been installed in Sussex to remember the fallen troops of World War I.

Home builder Barratt Homes has teamed up with Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI) to build their familiar Tommy Club figures in show homes in Sussex.

The statues were placed in the gardens of the houses of Barratt Homes at Chalkers Rise in Peacehaven and Wychwood Park in Haywards Heath. They were revealed for the Victory in Europe Day celebrations on May 8.

The design of the statues is based on the silhouettes of “Tommy” who is usually a British Army soldier wearing a helmet and standing with a rifle with a bayonet attached.

The figures will commemorate the lives of the soldiers who fought in the First World War.

They will also serve as a thank you to today’s veterans.

Lynnette St-Quintin, Director of Sales and Marketing for Barratt Southern Counties, said: “We are proud to give our own ‘Tommy’ figures a home in Chalkers Rise and Wychwood Park and are happy to do our part to show our gratitude to Armed Forces Veterans, many of whom live locally at our developments.

“We are still working to support active and former service personnel, and hope Tommy will help our residents and the local community take a moment to remember those who served in the World Wars.”

Barratt Homes is the Tommy Club’s first patron, supporting the charity with a donation of £ 100,000 and agreeing to buy the figures for its developments in the South East.

Funds raised have been used to provide jobs, housing and mental health support to veterans across the UK.
