Dominic Harrison, director of public health in Blackburn with Darwen in Lancashire, has warned of an ‘unusually high rate’ among 17 and 18 year olds – and urged ministers to allow jabs for teenagers to help to protect the community at large.
He told BBC Radio 4’s World At One: “We desperately need the UK government, the MHRA [Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency] market the Pfizer vaccine as safe and effective for this age group.
“Now the United States, Canada, Singapore and the European Union all said last week that the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine was safe and effective for 12+ years and I just hope the UK government can continue to do so. pass, assuming they agree that we could then start the rapid vaccination for this cohort, before the end of the trimester.
