Scientists have warned that Noble False Widow spider bites are severe enough to require hospital treatment and can trigger reactions similar to those caused by true black widow spiders found in Australia. Experts from the National University of Ireland, Galway, analyzed 16 cases of false widow spider bites, tripling the total number reported in the scientific literature.
The team found that most of the reported bites occur at home, with up to 88% while the victim was sleeping or the spider was trapped in their clothes.
Michel Dugon, one of the article’s authors and venom expert, said: “In addition to their medically important venom, noble false widows are extremely adaptable and competitive in nature.
“Two decades ago this species was almost unknown in Ireland, the UK or mainland Europe.
“We still have a lot to learn about its genetics, origin, behavior and development.
“One thing is certain, however – this species is here to stay, and we must learn to live with it.”
Unfortunately for arachnophobes, the Noble False Widow spider is one of the most common in many urban areas in the UK.
Horrible bites are known to sometimes cause severe symptoms in victims.
Symptoms recorded included pain, swelling, nausea, tremors, altered blood pressure, reduced mobility and, in rare cases, minor injuries and severe bacterial infections.

There are only three poisonous spiders in the UK that are capable of piercing human skin, but the Noble False Widow is currently not listed among them.
John Dunbar, another author of the article, said: “This species is increasing its range and population density, which will undoubtedly lead to an increase in bites (since submitting our study in March, we have already received other confirmed cases of bites).
“While most cases will have a mild outcome, we must continue to monitor Noble False Widow bites closely to understand the potential range of symptoms and treat severe cases when they arise. “
