Brighton records highest daily coronavirus figure since March Brighton News

BRIGHTON and Hove recorded their biggest daily increase in coronavirus cases since March.

In the 24 hours leading up to 9 a.m. this morning, 22 people have tested positive for the disease, according to figures published on the government’s website.

The last time this number was reported in a single day was March 21.

The total is still well below the January peak, which occurred on the 4th of this month.

That day, 437 people tested positive for the coronavirus.

It comes after City Council warned that cases in Brighton and Hove had risen by more than 70% over the past week.

In the seven days leading up to Friday, May 28, 56 new cases were confirmed in the city, a 71% increase from the previous week.

The city’s public health intelligence official, Kate Gilchrist, said people shouldn’t be too alarmed by the percentage increase.

She said: “Over the past few weeks, overall rates have been relatively low, so when viewed as a percentage, even a modest increase in the number of cases looks like a large increase.

“We can expect to see the numbers change each week as we come out of lockdown. But even so, we must remain vigilant because each new case reported shows that the virus is still circulating.

“The largest number of reported cases were among young people and young adults who had not yet been vaccinated. ”
