The 21-year-old was one of three schoolgirls from Bethnal Green who fled the UK at the age of 15 in 2015 to join the extremist organization that once controlled swathes of Syria and the ‘Iraq. The other women, Amira Abase and Kadiza Sultana, were reportedly killed in bombings of the since-destroyed caliphate.

Speaking from a squalid Syrian refugee camp, Ms Begum explained for the first time her reasoning behind fleeing UK security for the horrors of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s regime.

She has spoken as she continues to fight the Home Office’s decision to withdraw her citizenship for security reasons.

She told the documentary The Return: Life After Isis that she was the “black sheep” of her family and that she did not get along with her mother.

The schoolgirl at the time said she turned to Islam to “be part of something.”

Shortly after joining ISIS, the 15-year-old was married to Dutch Muslim convert Yago Riedijk.

The couple had three children, all of whom died in infancy.

She fled ISIS-controlled territory in the final days of the Caliphate when she was nine months pregnant and was later discovered in a Syrian refugee camp in February 2019.

The baby boy she gave birth to in the camp died of pneumonia at just three weeks old.

When asked about life under the Caliphate, his shameless comments about ISIS’s actions, combined with his desire to return to the UK, sparked outrage.

She said the Manchester bombing – in which 22 people, including young children, died – was “justified” because of the atrocities in Syria and Iraq.

And she said she was unfazed when she saw the head of a beheaded man because he was “an enemy of Islam”.

There were also allegations that she was an ISIS “executor” and helped sew explosives into suicide vests during her time with ISIS.

The outcry led then Home Secretary Sajid Javid to revoke his citizenship.

She appealed, the case being decided.

The UK Supreme Court ruled in February that she could not return to her country of birth while she challenged the ruling.
