Bugatti relaunched the Super Sport name for an upgraded version of the Chiron, which will serve as a sister model to the recently launched Chiron Pur Sport.
The new addition to the Chiron lineup shares its mechanics – and most of its styling – with the Chiron Super Sport 300+, a limited-edition special edition based on the specially adapted Chiron that reached a record top speed of 304 mph in 2019.
Unlike this car, however, the £ 2.75million Super Sport puts more emphasis on ride refinement. While the Super Sport 300+ was touted as a lightweight and primarily pace-oriented affair, the new Super Sport remains true to Bugatti’s tradition of “combining top speed with absolute luxury,” according to chairman Stephan Winkelmann. It is, he said, “the ultimate grand tourer”.
Among the design revisions to the standard Chiron are a bespoke front end and a 25cm longer rear end that optimizes aerodynamic efficiency. This, combined with a revised diffuser and EB110-inspired exhaust vents on the rear fenders, help counteract the “immense” downforce applied to the Super Sport at its top speed of 273 mph.
While the 30 production copies of the Super Sport record 300+ exposed carbon fiber body, the new Supersport stands out with its optional two-tone livery that is more overtly production-oriented. Bugatti says this makes the car appear longer and “even lower”.
The Pur Sport’s lightweight magnesium wheels are an option, but the Super Sport comes standard with a unique set of five-spoke aluminum components.
Inside, the Super Sport matches the standard Chiron more closely, with polished aluminum and leather used for most surfaces, as well as carbon fiber elements. Bugatti says it’s “an interior perfectly suited for high-speed continental travel”.
As with all other iterations of the Chiron, the Super Sport gets its power from a four-turbocharged 8.0-liter W16 gasoline engine, tuned to match the car’s 1,578 hp output at 304 mph. Top engine speed is up 300 rpm from the standard Chiron, at 7,100 rpm, while maximum torque – around 1180 lb-ft – is now available over a wider rev range.
With modifications to its turbochargers, oil pump, and cylinder heads, the Super Sport can accelerate from 0 to 124 mph in just 5.8 seconds – at that point, a Volkswagen Golf GTI still wouldn’t be around. 62 mph – and is 7% faster at 249 mph (400kph) than the standard Chiron.
