Father’s Day will take place in the UK this month.

The annual celebration allows us to show our appreciation for the important father figures in our lives.

We have celebrated fathers for centuries, and an annual day set aside for the celebration of fatherhood in Catholic Europe dates back to 1508.

Father’s Day 2021 is fast approaching, but when does it fall this year?

When is Father’s Day in the UK in 2021?

Father’s Day in the UK will take place on Sunday June 20.

The occasion always falls on the third Sunday in June.

Our celebration is based on the United States date, however, other countries around the world celebrate Father’s Day at different times of the year.

Why do we celebrate Father’s Day?

The first Father’s Day celebration in America is said to have taken place on July 5, 1908 by Gracy Clayton in West Virginia, which was also the place where Mother’s Day was first celebrated by Anna Jarvis.

Grace mourned the loss of her father after his death in a mining accident and suggested that her pastor honor all the fathers who died in the accident.

Two years later, on June 19, 1910, a more widespread Father’s Day commemoration was held in churches in Spokane, Washington.

It was organized by Sonora Dodd, daughter of American Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, who helped raise her younger siblings in Spokane after her mother died in childbirth.

Dodd had been inspired to hold the commemoration after attending a Mother’s Day service the previous year.

Although it was originally scheduled to take place on June 5, his father’s birthday, it was delayed until the third Sunday of the month to give local pastors a chance to prepare their sermons.

During the 1920s the enthusiasm around the event ran out and it began to wane, but by the 1930s Dodd began to further promote the celebration and raise awareness nationally.

She got help from business groups she knew would benefit from the holiday, such as the manufacturers of ties and tobacco pipes.

Although the celebration generated some presidential interest, the first attempts to have the holiday officially recognized were rejected.

However, Lyndon Johnson officially assigned the date of Father’s Day in 1966, and six years later Richard Nixon proclaimed it as a national holiday.

However, in the United States, Father’s Day is not a federal holiday, which means all stores and businesses open as usual.

In the UK it is not recognized as a public holiday.
