G7 Summit: Queen charms prime ministers and presidents | UK News

The Queen wowed G7 summit leaders by joking during a photocall: “Are you supposed to sound like you’re having fun?”

The Queen’s quip came as Presidents and Prime Ministers smiled for the camera in a ‘family photo’ after an evening reception at the Eden Project in Cornwall.

The 95-year-old monarch was joined by the Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall and Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, in what was seen as a major royal charm offensive and a huge boost for Prime Minister Boris Johnson as he aims to promote “World Britain” on the world stage.

The leaders, from German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and US President Joe Biden, many with their spouses, were pictured chatting with the royal family.

After the 40-minute reception, they went to an area to take a social distancing group photo, and after sitting down, the Queen said, “Are you supposed to look like you’re having fun?”

Leaders around the Queen laughed when Mr Johnson said ‘yes’, adding: ‘We had fun – despite appearances’.

Ms Merkel walked over to the Queen and thanked her for posing for the photo, saying: “Thank you for doing it for us.”

Members of the Royal Family also took time to carry out other commitments, including a meeting described by the Prince of Wales as “potentially revolutionary” in which CEOs and G7 leaders met to discuss how they could work together to tackle the climate crisis.
